I believe a thread fully documenting, in words if not pictures, the construction process would be reasonably-well received.

 

It came out beautifully. I call these wooden canoes floating furniture because they are so beautiful.
Well done sir. They are not about the money spent, they are a labor of love. And they are about the reward and satisfaction of completing a project like that.

I took a pause from the workbench build to go pick up my new planer from the trucking company after work.
This is what I got. Grizzly G0815 15" planer. This is a serious step up from my dewalt 735.

Loaded in my trailer right over the axles.

The crate was in excellent condition.

My ramps work great on the trailer too. I decided to use the trailer instead of the truck because I knew I would have to unload it myself and the trailer deck is much lower.

Left it on the dolly and just put it in the garage.

A friend is coming over on the weekend to help me get it in the basement shop.

It's 400 lbs and I'm 63 years old. Best to wait for some help. Even though I really want to uncrate this thing! 10 years ago I would have just muscled this thing down the stairs. Now I think twice about stuff like this.

Yeah well this project has taught me that I need to upgrade. It's all good, I have a lot of 6"+ stuff that will get fed through this new planer to test it out.
It's killing me to have to wait till Saturday to get this in my shop.

 

We have the helical G0891 3hp 15” Griz. The thing is friggin amazing. Our whole shop is pretty much Grizzly. Good stuff.

 

Yea this will pair up well with my grizz 8" jointer that I upgraded with a Byrd head. I have a large grizz drill press but that's mostly for metal work. I've had good experiences with grizzly machines.

 

Tonight after work I took a little time to prep the shop for the new planer. My friend is coming over Saturday to help me get it down to the shop.
First order of business was to remove my dewalt planer from the flip top cart. My friend is buying the dewalt when he comes over.

Then I attached the disc sander to the flip top cart since I destroyed the stand it was on, lol.

And I unbolted the arbor press from the stand and carried it out to the trash. The scrappers will pick it up. It's just a cheap harbor freight stand and not worth my time to mess with.

Ready for the new planer now...................

 

Hey, is anyone here using a double compound sliding miter saw? I’m looking to buy one and am looking for thoughts on which to get.

 

I’m in the same boat, I was thinking of going with the dewalt 12” 15amp. I was mainly looking at the dewalt because all my other tools are dewalt. My brother has a kobalt that he likes.

 

When I upgraded from my Dewalt mitersaw I did a lot of research and I went with the makita 12" slider. It's butter smooth, has a soft start motor that is really nice. The soft start means no jumping of the saw when you pull the trigger. And it's direct drive through bevel gears, no belts. Has decent dust collection as far as miter saws go, they all suck. The machining on the table is super nice. Everything just operates very smoothly and with precision. And it has a laser that you can turn off. I have no regrets with this purchase.

I collect dust with the blue hose connected to a tool triggered shop vac and a big 4" hole behind the saw connected to a cyclone dust collector.

 

I’ve been eyeing that one. The 779 in particular. I know a couple people that have them and like them.

 

Which model is that one?

 

I have the 779 and have been very happy. It’s fairly well regarded as one of the best sliding miter saws for hobby woodworkers. To me the price jump up to a Makita or Festool was just too much for me.
