It says allow the engine to idle immediately after hill climbing.
Not after pulling in a rest stop, driving through town, etc. But idle immediately. Which means stop.
I have been on interstates where they have lanes reserved to the side for steep grades.
So you would according to the manual have to immediately pull off and idle at the top to prevent damage. That's what it says. At least you can look at that big display while you are idling.

Doesn't the turbo have its own coolant circuit with an electronic water pump?
Maybe they still want the oil to be circulating

It means after you are done driving. Like if you have been gunning it, let it idle for a minute or two after coming to a stop.

You do not have to pull over and stop after you crest the top of a long steep hill on the interstate and start going down the other side. That would be ridiculous.

 

If that was the case then why doesnt Toyota specify a time limit for driving up a hill or driving 62 mph or greater?

 

No. The turbo is cooled only by oil, so the engine needs to be running for the oil to circulate. If the oil stops flowing in a hot turbo, the stationary oil in the turbo gets cooked.

No. Idle just means foot off the gas. There's no requirement to "come to a stop", that would be contrary to the physics of the problem.

So after climbing a mountain we leave our foot off the gas on the interstate for "approximately one minute " ?
There are no physics involved here, maybe thermodynamics.

 

^Only if you for some reason plan on shutting off the engine on the Interstate immediately after climbing said hill. You neglected to read the section heading "Idle time before engine stop".

 

If only you read the header of the screenshot. Where it says “before engine stop.”

 

Idle immediately before engine stop is not the same as idle immediately.

The turbo is water cooled, and doesn’t have a separate water pump.

So the water pump is mechanical and there is no secondary pump?

Correct. Some models do contain an additional pump for the HVAC heater core, but not for the turbo.

Well, that explains why there is an idle recommendation at all.

 

So basically after every single highway ride that is above 62 MPH (every time on the interstate it's like ~70 MPH) you would need to idle for 1 minute once you get to your destination before turning the truck off?

Yeah what a fucking joke.

 

i heard you can only go 1/4 mile up hill before you have to take a one minute break

It clearly states allow the engine to idle immediately after high-speed driving, which it defines as "continuous driving of 62 MPH or more". On the highway i am continuously driving at 62 MPH or more.

So no, my destination would be a couple minutes out from the interstate usually, at which point i assume i would need to idle for 1 minute based on the manual. Or would i need to idle the second i get off the highway?
