285/70r17 barely fits under

Do you or does anyone here have any criticisms to the following pics? I did zero modifications underneath the bed. All I did was tug on the 33in BF Goodrich spare (as shown in the pics) towards the rear while I cranked it upward with the other hand. Because of the forward prongs/tongues that used to hold the stock spare in place, this 33 in. spare is angled forward (front portion of spare is drooping downward while rear is flush upward). However, as shown, the right side isn't touching the exhaust pipe and is held in place by the exhaust hanger. The left side is held in place by what I guess is called the leaf suspension bracket. The tire isnt forcefully pushing onto the bracket nor the exhaust pipe hanger, but again, it's snuggly in place which prevents any movement while the truck is in motion.

I did the same to fit the 255/85/16 up there, but also bashed the prongs mostly out of the way. It’s also a 33” and is just as close with no issues.

Later on I redrilled the hanger mount and set it back a bit more so itd be easier and also chopped the exhaust.

Looking to get a high clearance rear bumper soon.

 

I've read about re-drilling. I'm worried that if I do that, it will create rust in the new holes. There's also a YouTube video where this dude got a blow torch and lit up those prongs/tongues. When they got hot enough, he got a mallet and hammered them forward about an inch or so. That did the trick as a 33in tire fit easily. I don't feel like spending money on a blow torch and mallet. I think my current situation will suffice.

 

I have a 285/75r17 under. Its deflated to 10.

 

You don’t need a torch, they’re stamped metal and kind of weak….I think I even used a rubber mallet.


Spray paint anything you cut, drill or scratch and you’re fine.

I hate the shitty jack to lower the spare, that got a bit messed up when the tires shop lowered my spare to change it.

 

What rim is your spare on?
I’d like to go this size and only want to buy 4 rims and was hoping it’d fit on a taco sport 17” spare rim.

For home use I have an old 3 ton floor jack I got from harbor freight (stands too), oddly it’s really good. The newer ones seem to be low profile.

Now that I’m lifted I’ll bet the oem bottle is no good, might have to carry 4x4 block now for street…..haven’t checked yet.


For trail I have a hi-lift but they’re super sketchy and you need sliders, bumpers or some way to attach if you can’t use the hitch. They’re a last resort, not for home use.

 

There's some really stout bottle jacks on the web with adapters to hit some stupid pictures heights. I ended up getting a 6ton bottle jack from safety jacks.

 

What did you have to do to fit that tire? Just the psi? I have 295/79r17’s and would like to stuff my spare under there if possible

 

That’s what I had to do to fit my 33x10 the way I was happy with. Still quite close to exhaust pipe but no issues.

 

So I have been wondering about this lately. Currently I have 285/75/16's on my TRD Pro, and of course the spare is a 265. What is the best option for a spare that will fit and still be able use as a spare to get me home, and/or the the nearest Tire Shop? I don't want to wedge a 285 under the truck. Anyone know what the largest tire I can fit up there is that would be an adequate spare?

 

added a few d rings and store it under the canopy....

 

I had 295/70/17 underneath before this current setup. Did not deflate and had my wife helped me whined it back up. Nitto ridge grab.

How long have you had that in there? Also curious about exhaust heat and any effects on the tire.

 

Close to 2 years before I went bigger. My wife helped me with the skid plate as well after i dropped it on my forehead lol

 

So no issues then with the exhaust that close to the tire?

 

In my case no. Remember, the truck doesnt idle forever. I saw others had to modified the brackets but like said, I didn’t want to do all that.

Almost 2 yrs underneath no problem. At that time, I didn’t want my bed to turn into a spare bed. The tire carrier option was overkill for me since the longbed was already extra long to park lol!
