If you are going to go over 62 and then immediately stop then idle. If you are going to drive on side streets less than 62 after driving over 62 then you are fine and do not have to idle for a minute.

Oh okay, then why does the manual state Immediately after high speed driving which it then defines as continuous driving at 62 MPH or more?

Continuing to drive around after going in excess of 62 MPH for a sustained period would go directly against what the manual states.

Are you just claiming the engineers don't know what they were talking about when they included that in the manual with the keywords "immediately after"?

You know what...you are right. Toyota is putting out a product that requires you to make a safety stop as soon as you drop below 62 mph.

Curious enough I owned an 86 turbo 22RTE and it said to do the same thing. What a difference 40 years makes!

No they are putting out a product that requires you to idle for at least one minute after driving over 62 MPH continuously.

We are stating that your pedantic, super-literal interpretation of the statement in the owner's manual is what's incorrect. Like, are you screwing with us or do you really think that you have to pull over after climbing a hill where your speed happens to drop from 65 to 60 MPH? C'mon.

The manual is clear. "After" means when driving has concluded. It does not mean that you have to pull over and idle the truck immediately after slowing from 100 to 50 or from or 63 to 61 MPH. If anything, doing a "cool-down lap" on surface streets at 30-50 MPH, coasting in 8th gear at 1100 RPM with 30-50 MPH air blasting through the grille, is probably more effective than the cooling fan at clearing out the underhood heat.

The statement is basically a result of the truck being in the zone on the highway. At 80 MPH, there is a steady 80 MPH blast of air coming into the front of the truck. If you turn it off immediately after coming to a stop, all of the heat that was previously being whisked away by all that air has nowhere to go and it just bakes everything under the hood. If you idle it for a minute or two, it can blast the cooling fan for a similar effect to bring the temperatures down.

No i'm not being pedantic and saying you need to pull over right away. I asked if i would need to idle for 1 minute before turning the truck off AFTER reaching my destination. Someone here then essentially claimed that if you continue to drive around after getting off the highway your all good and don't need to idle before shutdown.

You think it's reasonable to sit and wait a minute idling after you reach your destination before turning the truck off after every highway trip? That is what i interpret it as and that's a joke.

So what is it? No need to idle after you reach destination going 62+ MPH or you do?

I read it and it reads like i would need to sit and idle once i reach my destination after every single highway trip. What a fucking joke.

What everyone is telling you is that after you slow down below 62 you go in to normal driving and as long as you are doing that for a minute they you do not need to idle. If you go from 62+mph to 0 in under a minute then you probably want to idle. But damn, keep stirring the pot.

Use your judgement. That's why it says "immediately." If you have been going 80 and then drive a few gentle miles on surface streets, like a cool-down lap — IMO, no. If you come flying off the interstate directly into a rest stop — yes. Or if you have been at 2/3 throttle for a few minutes deep into the boost while climbing some dunes, don't shut it off immediately when you get to the top.

If you drive a few miles on surface streets after getting of the highway, the high-speed driving is in the past, not immediately before when you pull into your driveway.

So in your opinion as long as you do cool down laps / stay below 62mph for a few minutes before turning off it's all good? No need to idle for 1 minute like the manual says?

What are you doing after you leave the highway before you shut off the engine?

Driving around at ~45 MPH, certainly not idling for 1 minute straight right before shutdown.

Yes because if you did that, you would be turning it off at a time that was not immediately after driving at 62+ MPH

Under the continuous driving of 62 MPH or more that calls for an "idle time of approximately 1 minute".
