    From my wife’s mazda’s manual:

“Caution. After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine for 30 seconds before stopping it. Otherwise, the turbocharger could be damaged”

What if you are driving at highway speed in a turbo Mazda take your exit, that has a stop light at the end of the ramp and your very same Mazda has auto start/stop will the engine idle for 30 seconds before it shuts off?

I am very surprised they cant just build a turbo timer into the truck. You can start the thing from an Apple watch, why cant it just idle itself for 1 minute and shut itself off after you walk away?

Because it virtually never needs to happen, and people would be frustrated by a vehicle that “won’t turn off!”

I can't agree. A lot of people look for the manuals online. Others are ready to pay for the used ones. I was surprised by the prices and ended up looking for it online. I was lucky to find it here toyotamanuals.org and can quickly check it when needed.

I always read the owner's manual (well, the maintenance schedule) before buying a new car to see if there is anything weird/expensive.

Like the new Tacoma needs plugs every 40k and has separate coolant for the intercooler. Just things to be aware of.

I wouldn't buy a VW with a DSG transmission (pricey fluid changes) and would mentally have to file the cost away for a $1000 timing belt job at 100k miles.

This isn't Toyota's engineering, it's a common recommendation by most auto manufacturers for their turbo engines. It's obvious you know little about modern engine design and maintenance. Can't spare a minute?

You don’t even have to. The time spent turning into a parking lot or going down your residential street will more than cover the cooling time. How many times have you gone from highway speed to engine off without ~1min of slow speed or idle time? I can’t remember even one for me

Good point, more so in the winter though. Triple digit weather, towing, long steep passes then otherwise.

Ive never pulled a long steep pass and then slowed to a stop and shut the truck off within 1minute. Just pulling into a parking space takes almost all of that time easily. And if I stop on the side of the road at the top, I just don’t shut off my truck

    This thread is pretty entertaining.

As a previous poster pointed out... the idle time to allow oil to continuously flow through a hot (1100 Deg F for some) turbo after lengthy pulls with boost isn't anything new. Almost every turbo diesel engine requires this.

It's not very often it happens, but I've had to do it a few times where I'm pulling a trailer with our 6.0L diesel and have had steady EGT's of 1000 Deg F (usually 1200 is the danger zone) and pull the truck over into a gas station or rest stop.

Pretty obvious when you are in the boost for a prolonged period of time... you just need to sit in the cab for a minute or two to let the oil pump circulate oil through the needle bearings in the turbo.

There used to be some programs / tunes in the diesel world where you can set a idle time to automatically shut off the engine if it senses EGT temps above a certain range. Not really needed if you just pay attention.

    This isn't a major deal.

I would be curious to see how the turbo holds up for long term service. They hold up fine on diesels... just hope Toyota did their homework and did sufficient testing.
