It gets a pass for being released nearly a decade ago.

We have spent 7 years bitching about that. We are trying to move forward and turn over a new leaf.

Highway mileage is always going to be more a function of aerodynamics than engine performance. That’s why everything basically tops out the same. Nobody wants an aerodynamic truck, so we get what we get, and that’s 22-24mpg highway with gasoline

The only reason it gets hated on is because it's a unibody and not an actual body on frame and as a result it can't really tow past 4k lbs or do heavy off-roading, just like the Santa Cruz or Honda Ridgeline.

I honestly have no clue if a body on frame pickup could do past 25 MPG on the highway aside from the BEV's like the lightning getting 70 MPGe. But once you start comparing everything but towing the ICE motors just become so laughable compared to the BEV's performance.

They are quite popular and proving there is indeed a market for an economical pickup that gets good gas mileage. Basically the updated version of the old 2WD 5 Lug Toyotas. Sure it would be nice to get a RC version of it, but the market demands a crew cab.

The popularity might even grow even more with the ever rising mid-size prices. Reading a lot grumbling on here over the price increases.

Wow, those are some crazy prices. The literal cheapest double cab 4wd model is $3,000 more than I paid for my loaded TRD OR back in the day.

I guess we’ll find out next year. I had hoped to get a PRO at some point, but I won’t pay a ridiculous price. Prices for a non hybrid Off-road are ridiculous when using the configurator, so I’m not optimistic.

Definitely wait for the hybrid, people don’t understand the nature of turbos and fuel economy. You start pressing that accelerator and it will start drinking fuel very quickly.

When it comes to price, yes it is pretty expensive, but don’t forget from 2017 to now inflation is about 23%.

    I think it's a few things.

The Tundra has auto start/stop which bumps the rating up by 4-5%. Which is probably around 1 mpg.

The second thing is more about perception I think.

    Tundra SR5 4x4: 17/23/19
    Tundra Limited 4x4: 17/22/19

    Tacoma SR5 4x4: 19/24/21
    Tacoma Limited: 20/23/21

Obviously it's "only" 2 mpg different and they seem similar. But that 2 mpg represents a 10.5% increase because the numbers are fairly low. 10.5% isn't nothing.

And they're both big giant blocks driving down the road. I think Toyota screwed up a bit with the new Tacoma design - the lower air-dam looks like crap. They seemed to design more for the off-road models than the "regular" models. Toyota used to have two different ride heights - IDK why they didn't bring that back for this generation. The SR/SR5/TRD Sport could all have less ride height and still be super capable trucks - and likely fit the needs of those buyers better - and they'd look better.

Oh good, another thread has been hijacked by MPG

I was doing some calculations to figure out my long-term miles per gallon, and then I realized that I really don’t give a shit.

Configured a 4th gen with the same or closest options as my 2021 3rd gen. + $13k MSRP difference.

    I'm sorry, but...no.

Out of curiosity, what is missing in the 4g that your 3g has, and what’s missing in your 3g that the 4g has?
