At the surface it looks like more TB12 than BB. I base that on the fact the only years BB missed the playoffs was Tom’s rookie year (not starting), Tom’s 2nd year starting, the year Tom had an early season ending injury, and now 3 of the 4 years after Tom left. But that is oversimplified. I’m sure if TB was drafted by any of the other 31 teams he would AT BEST be sporting jewelry at the Montana/Bradshaw level. Right coach, right QB, right division, right time.

I admire their success (both jealous and respectful at the same time).

Apparently Cam Newton is jealous of someone with the title “Mr Irrelevant”. Fine, it’s yours Cam.

Right place and time can always help, some more than others. Michael Vick was an example of that in the NFL; specifically, the scrambling QB wasn't as prevalent as now so teams had to adjust.

I've said to many people about the Patriots since Tom left "one does not simple replace TFB". I do agree he's a generational talent. Also had to remind many people (even here in MA) that Tom was more a game manager a la Trent Dilfer at first and had only to not screw the game up, plus our defense back then was pretty stout even when Bill B walked in. Not quite the 2000 Ravens stout but pretty damn good. I think he could have won one of the first 3 without that defense, maybe..but still off the foot of some guy named Adam Vinatieri for sure.

Tom like you said took less than market for the team to go get/keep people. I want to say he restructured once that got Corey Dillon on the team (which was a perfect situation for both sides). I honestly wonder if Tom leaving wasn't a situation like Ray Bourque wanting one more crack at the title and if New England wouldn't build that team he wanted to go somewhere that had/would. Tedy Bruschi is another lifetime Patriot with that thought, though his was also based on his family and not having an agent take a piece of his pie.

The injury season of 2008 was just wild. 11-5 and missed the playoffs. Great encapsulation sir.

As much as the jewelry I myself liked the fact that Tom was low key as a person, you never saw headlines about him flipping his truck over or stage diving drunk off his ass like certain other Boston sports people.

I 100% of the time get stoked when one of the big boys score a TD. As a center and defensive end in HS I know how badass that would have been

Based on his post game comments, Staley was the only person in America that wasn’t certain he would be fired today.

I called it back in September when he went for 4th down two weeks in a row deep in his own territory late in a 1 score game. His defense bailed him out both weeks with a game saving INT. He’s lucky they even won 5 games. There is ‘aggressive’ and then there is ‘dumb’. He probably was on a short leash all year after the playoff choke.

Hopefully they get a decent coach. I’d like to see what Justin Herbert is capable of.

They missed the timing on having Sean Payton. That’s a shame for Herbert. There just aren’t as many top coaches as there are teams and even when you have one you still need a gm/front office to put it together.

This will certainly step up the Bill rumors as Chargers coach and GM next year.

“A man’s got to know his limitations.” I hope it’s head coach only.

I was at a game when they played the Chefs in LA a few years ago where he went on all 4th downs. Must’ve been like 4 or 5 of them that should have been field goals. All the 4th downs turned out to be turn overs. Not a bolts fan at all but glad to see that idiot gone.

Watching the refs hand the Lions that goal line stop is new for me. Usually the refs work against Detroit.
