It’s a scam. For 10 years I had no credit running and that started to be a problem which is stupid AF

Agreed. Saving a long rant, my goal is to ultimately get back to not having a credit score. Until the next mortgage I'll enjoy being debt-free

I wish. I think it's all burnt out after 9 years of government work and everything else I went through

Same until I need a vehicle and had next to no cash.

Nah, we're here. I am gaming the system now to see how far I can play the Number-Go-Up game for a new high score. No extra spending, just high value actions.

Mines somewhere in the 800 range, just from having 2 CCs and paying off 2 vehicles, and holding down a mortgage. My student loan actually hurt my credit because I paid it off without ever paying any interest. That's the biggest scam, "Not long enough line of credit". How about being financially responsible?

Exactly. It takes no account of assets held or debt/equity. It's how much debt do you maintain and do you pay your bills on time

I have a tendency to buy stuff and pay it off; the two auto loans I've had were gone in less than two years each. My score has hovered in the mid/upper 700s but going to suffer now that my mortgage is gone. Probably going to open a credit card just to maintain it to simplify the process for the next house, as I don't presently have one. Shit is dumb.

As long as you have one open, it'll stay up. I only use mine to pay for gas and groceries as it earns cashback and is linked to my bank account. I can just login to my bank on my phone and pay it right off.

It'll stay up, but will take a hit once the mortgage has rolled off of my record due to being open for a short time. Not the end of the world, and I don't have to like it.

Won't be the first time I've had a card, either, and I'll use it the same as yours. I prefer to avoid them if possible.

Bruh, I lost a collection from my childhood. Some of the cards I lost that I had multiples of are worth hundreds now.

Mine went up after I took out a loan. Got dinged for no installment accounts lol really should be a debt management score.

Credit cards are always paid in full but that doesn’t count for anything and would occasionally get hit with high utilization. Between adjusting the limits and a couple extra cards, that’s no longer a problem.

It’s a pretty dumb system. Especially since things like paying bills (utilities, rent, etc) don’t have any input into it.

As always, I am late to the party with my two cents!
Credit when utilized properly is great.
When I left my job to start my business ~12 years ago, having a good credit file allowed me to borrow money and certain investments that have paid off in multiples.
As a rule, I use credit to make business investments, or investments into appreciating assets like real estate. Depreciating assets like vehicles have always been paid in cash, unless they were at 0%.
Obviously, with current rates, a lot of caution is necessary to spend money you don't have!

I understand the uses of credit, and it sounds like it has worked well for you. Doesn't change the stupidity of the current credit system.
