I have 235 miles on my new 2023, and now have a Check Engine light.
The only thing changed is a locking gas cap.

It being Saturday today, I won't be able to get the check code read until next week.
Hopefully I don't have a brand new rig with an engine/trans malfunction.

The Toyota app installed on my phone is useless as tits on a boar.
It appears to be 99% marketing and data collection, only 1% useful.
"You have an engine / trans malfunction. See your dealer."

Relax brother, it's the locking gas cap! Put the factory one back on and drive the truck. The light should clear with a certain amount of error free driving.

Bet the locking cap isn't OEM. If so, those are hit or miss if they seal properly

Toyota does not make an OEM locking gas cap.

    I surmised not.

Throw the old one back on and see what happens.

Just go to autovalue, or buy a cheap scan tool.

It's 100% that cap. Toss it.

NAPA said they will refund if it causes errors.
    It is going back tomorrow.

If you’re trying to keep thieves from stealing your gas. It’s probably best they siphon it out . Be better than them drilling into the gas tank.

Nearly all Toyota tanks are back ordered because of this. It's brutal.

Worse yet, the ones that they attempt to siphon have damaged 1 way flow valves so the owners can't fill up.

Petty thieves have no idea the damage they cause.

Are you saying I can't syphon my own gas to put into a fellow traveler's tank without doing some damage myself?

Yes, that is correct, you can’t siphon without jamming something through the back flow preventer valve,,,, as far as I know @Bishop84 is the actual tech though.

Check out post #61 for pictures of the real Stant and the counterfeit ones. I have the cap on the left and no check engine light in 8 years of use.

Dummies tried drilling my locking gas cap lock off and they couldn’t open it, so they tried drilling the tank next. It was the steel tank on my 1st Gen with steel OEM armor underneath it so they could only drill half way up the side- they got no gas for all the effort as I was low to begin with. Luckily tank repair epoxy works very well on steel tanks but I don’t think I’d try to repair the plastic 3rdgen tank. It would be an expensive repair too! Not putting on a locking cap anymore for it also.

I had a 94 Dakota with a cracked plastic gas tank and used JB Weld which held until 2021 when traded in for a Tundra. But there is a difference between a hole and a crack.

JB plastic weld? I didn’t think it would work, good to know though.

Seems like same Issue that my 03 4runner had. It kept popping check engine for " small evap leak " but there was no leak, just faulty sensor not reading the gas cap.

I had the same question in mind. Don't know if the "Plastic Weld" was available way back when.
