By the amount of sludge on that sensor looks like oil changes have been neglected, there are no sensors on the exhaust cams.

Anyway cleaning the cam sensor isn't really gona help anything if your having issues, only if metal was attached to the tip would it affect the sensor reading.

Depends on which year model your engine is. As well as which platform. That will dictate if it has dual VVT-I or single. I am pretty certain that your vehicle is a Tacoma though.

It is a 07 Tacoma Prerunnner V6. Its got over 300K on it but i always changed oil. It had VVT code but i cleaned these two sensors near valve covers on top and the code has not come back, also checked VVT filters and looked pretty clean so I think maybe my issue was just the sludge built up on the intake cam sensors.

I'd suspect either one of the VVT solenoids is getting sticky or the timing chain is getting stretched, grime on the sensor wouldn't affect it reading unless it contained metallic debris.

Does 1GRE engine have cam phasers on both intake and exhaust cams or just on the intake cam?
If the it only has cam phaser on intake cams then it should not have cam sensors for the exhaust cams right ?

2nd gen Tacoma's just have a cam sensor and VVT on the intake cam, only the dual VTT version in the 4 Runner and FJ Cruiser have sensors and VVT on both cams.

What? that seems odd, ill edit it. Every other freaking Toyota has the sensor. We live and breathe the 2GR so obviously im mistaken.

Interesting, pretty much ever engine I've seen only the VVT cams are monitored.
2nd gen tacos don't have sensors on the exhaust cams on the 2.7l or the 4.0l.
3rd gens do because they have VVT on intake and exhaust.

Ok, cool thanks because Ive got a 2007 Taco 4.0L 1GRE and i cannot find them anywhere. Must have been looking at a manual diagram from a 3rd gen accidentally.
