Subject pretty much says it all. I had a cracked driver's side differential mount and did not realize it, put it into 4wd while out on some forestry roads, and the diff kicked up and hit the block. The driver's side axle popped out of the sleeve and the truck dumped all of the engine oil onto the ground. I shut it down and got towed home where I took off the skid plate and saw the damage.

I had originally gotten this truck for wheeling and I have spent a ton of time and money on everything but the drivetrain, with the exception of 5.29 gears. It's an automatic, which at the time was perfect because I had no idea what I was doing off-road but now I've been wishing it was manual.

Should I put a junkyard engine into it and sell it? Fix it and keep it? Sell it as is and get something older and cheaper to fix when I inevitably break something? I'm still in a bit of shock so I'm just taking a poll, I have a few days before I need to start making decisions.

Sell it as is . No point of dumping more money into to it and not get back your return .

Are you prepared to do an engine swap yourself? That is the huge question

can a fab shop weld the damage? Cheapest and easiest option to try first I'd think.

I have not done one before, however I have learned via trial by fire with this truck. The big problem is that I don't really have the space to do a swap, my garage is pretty tight when it's up on jack stands.

yeah, if it’s just a hole in the block that didn’t come from an engine failure (rod going through the side) the best bet would be to look into repairing it. Might not look pretty but if it just needs to keep the oil in….

Possibly, there are no large holes that I can tell, however the crack goes pretty much the full length of the block.

Definitely not an internal failure, I didn't even notice anything was wrong until I saw oil pouring out the bottom. There is also a mark on the block where the diff hit it. I tried to take some pics but oil was still dripping out onto my phone, will probably be able to get some tomorrow, it's dark now.

Back in the 70's, I drove a VW Super Beetle. It developed about a 6 inch crack in the block and leaked oil like a sieve. We patched that crack with some JB Cold Weld and drove that damn thing for another couple of years!

Based on this response I would recommend selling it and buying a running Tacoma. My opinion. Expensive solution. Good luck. Patching/welding the block - I can’t see how that would work but others have said it does work so maybe that is worth a try.

Are you sure it's the block and not the oil pan. The pan is 2 pieces. There's a large aluminum casting that covers the whole bottom of the block then from that bolts on the small black steel pan.

You guys are my heroes! That what cracked, not the block but the secondary pan underneath. I've posted some pictures. Sorry for the potato quality pic of the crack but my phone would just not stop focusing on the stuff to the side.

WOW! Early Christmas present for sure!
Maybe rethink wheeling a DD. I am sure this will be an unpopular response, as this sounds like a very unique incident,, but still risk n rewards, is where my mind goes.

    minor tweaks
For me the deciding factor would be what could I get for it salvage compared to what it will sell for repaired, they sold a lot of those trucks, the motor shouldn't be too difficult to find. Factor in paying someone to do the work if that's the route you'd take. I don't know the numbers but that truck isn't cheap (2019 OR) to purchase, I would think the fixed value would be significantly higher than the salvage value condition not withstanding.

Yeah, luckily I work from home so having no ride is just an inconvenience. I've got a motorcycle for when the need arises but don't like riding in the cold/rain (which severely limits riding time in Seattle).
