New Toyo Open Country A/T III tire

I have the SL and although they are doing great in the wet, I don’t see the tread lasting no 60k. Maybe if I drove like gramma but I got these for surefooted higher speeds. I will be lucky to get a couple years outta them but that’s the rub on the softer SL’s. We’ll see how they do in the snow this winter. My first set of the ATIII’s and I noticed the tread blocks aren’t as tall as my older ATII’s I had on an older Sierra. They say the siping is full depth so we’ll see. Liking them so far. Just did a morning commute in heavy rain and she blasts through any and all water. This time of year the leaves are accumulating on the roads and clogging up the catch basins so aquaplaning is a big deal here in the PNW. None so far. And the traction is pretty solid. A few times I spun out on the traffic paint at lights but it holds well on the clover leaf freeway entrances. Once my traction starts to go due to the tread block getting smaller then I’ll get new rubber. If I get 2 winters out of these I’ll be satisfied. I never wear my tires down that far because of my driving. I need good tread or they come off

 

Hey fellers, hope you don't mind a question. I have a 2020 Off Road with stock suspension/lift and tires. 68000 miles and time for new tires. I was wanting the Toyo's and found - TOYO OPEN COUNTRY A/T III 255 /70 R16 115T XL BSW. They call Discount Tires "America's Tire" where I live, and these are $196 each.

From what I've read the 255's will get a little better gas milage, but also be better in the rain which is what I am after. Plus, I just wanted to do something different, if I'm being honest. Any thoughts on the 255's vs the 265's, pros, cons, "that's dumb" comments appreciated.

 

They will be about half an inch shorter if you’re okay with that. Personally I doubt you’re going to notice a difference between 255/265 in rain traction.

 

Yea they will be shorter but won’t matter much. The contact patch is what matters in the rain in my experience. Wider is better for wet traction. I bought 8.5” Methods for that reason. If your mainly driving on the road there are way better dedicated rain/snow tires out there like the Michelin defender for your stock rims.

 

Going into my 3rd PNW winter with these in P/Metric. My experience with rain has been similar. Some PNW snow storms as well, has been favorable. Light off roading has been great. However I should do a through inspection of these tires before the snow flies here. I'm not 100% sure on wear as I haven't had a good look lately.

 

I don’t think I’ll be buying LTs again. They run nice and smooth on the highway like all the other Toyos, but their wet traction is really turning out to be disappointing so far, and I’m only at 10K. In my experience, the XL/SL tread was much better. I don’t recall unintentionally peeling out in the rain even once on those. I do it all the time now, including like 4 different times today.

I think my next tire will be 265/70R17 SL black wall.

 

Going into 6k miles on mine I’m still impressed with their surefootedness on these wet PNW roads as I was with my older ATII’s. Still have yet to try them out in snow or ice but I’m confident they’ll do fine. I have noticed a couple spin outs on hill starts in the city but not too concerned cuz the cornering is where it’s at with these tires. At high speeds. On wet roads. That’s the Superman shaped tread blocks that have the angled siping. Once worn down, they’ll be just like every other AT tire and start sliding on hard turns but for now they grab and hold. So far so good on my SL’s

 

I had the 265/65R17 XLs which have the same tread as SL, they were definitely superb. I went from those to LT255/75R17 and it’s nowhere near as good. Oh well. I’ll run them until I’m sick of them and then I’ll buy SLs again.

 

I just got this recall letter this past week. Might wanna have a look see fellas. Says theres a batch that went out from Serbia plant that didn’t go right and can cause failures on the AT3’s

I don’t know for sure but I’ve seen plenty of people with those sizes and none of them ever said Serbia. Might be worth examining the numbers and such if you didn’t. The bits from Serbia might go from there to Japan/US for final assembly.

All that said, my size isn’t on there so I know I’m good.

 

I'm checked them last time. I don't have any of the matching DOT/TIN in the recall.

 

I just got this letter too....and sure enough...ONE of my 4 is affected. I only have about 5k miles on the tires so I guess I'll be running one new one and 3 with 5k miles on them. Don't expect that will be an issue, right?

 

Put the new one on the front driver's side.

 

Oddly enough, that is where the one affected tire currently resides. What's the reasoning behind your suggestion (just curious).

 

The fronts wear the fastest and supposedly the drivers front takes a lot of wear.

 

I purchased these when they were released back around 2020. They have less than 40k miles on them and despite all scheduled services and tire rotations, the tread on both front tires is completely gone. Has anyone had a similar experience and has anyone pursued the dealer/manufacturer for the warranty? I see online that Toyo offers a warranty on them.

 

There have been a few who have burned through the tread on non-LT models. I haven't seen anyone report wearing out LTs early. What size did you get, LT or SL, and what pressure do you run in them?

All tire companies have warranties on their treadwear, but I'll be surprised if you make any progress cashing in on it. They nearly always blame some part of the truck for causing wear.

 

Yeah, this is what I expected. It's lifted, it's been off road, I might be missing paperwork for tire rotations etc. They have a number of excuses to choose from, but I plan on going down that road to see if I have any luck anyway. The size is LT285x70R17. Can't remember the PSI off the top of my head, but I probably just do whatever is on the tire.

If it helps, those should be around 33-35 psi cold.

But, looking at your truck, with the lift, arms, aftermarket rims, etc, there are a lot of factors anyways. Your alignment may not be where it needs to be.
