The one who dies with the most stuff wins.
Remove, clean, and reinstall the electrical connections on the diffs and see if that does anything. That is all I needed to do after some nasty mud crossings.

The same happened to me. Suddenly got the message pop up. We use 4 Hi regularly. Been following this thread. The mechanic I went to has changed the whole thing. Didn't work. Than started troubleshooting it again, went over every piece, took it apart, cleaned it, went over every wire. Trouble shot by using this forum and others. Nothing fixed it. Now have appointment with dealer. Terrified they will ask 3K to change parts that need not changing. Tempted to find a hammer and tap the black box.

Update (albeit a little tardy): light tap with a rubber mallet and wood dowel and FIXED. :bananadance:
Has worked flawlessly for the last month or so. I’ll pull and clean in the spring, but for now this was a huge win! Thanks everyone!!!

I used a plastic mallet and a 1/2 stainless rod. Tapped about as hard as I would to counter sink a trim nail.

FWIW, I had this error just come up after going a long time without engaging 4WD. The error was present until I restarted the vehicle. I then tried to switch to 4hi and it worked. Sticking actuator likely.

The tap and the video both helpful. Use hi and lo and 2wdlo regularly and occasional engagement failure. Will go under and tap next time. Kudos to TW forums.

You’re the real MVP! I was in a tough spot when this failure message came up for the first time. I found a stick, gave the box a few light taps, and it worked perfectly—I was out of there in no time. Thank you!

For anyone tempted to grab a hammer, don’t bother. It doesn’t need much force—just light taps will do the trick, and it only takes a couple of seconds. Give it a try!

I’ve replaced my actuator and this is still happening. Anybody know the part number for the harness that goes to the diff and the actuator?
