Well i bought another gen 1. Promised my wife I would finish the add on to our house before I would even start fixin the old girl up. Its a 98 with just under 200,000 miles, 4 cylinder. Any idea where the oil is coming from? Mostly in front of oil pan. Thanks in advance.

You'll have to clean it up and check. Could be a front main seal, timing chain cover, oil pan, power steering, etc. if you wanna get fancy you can add some dye to the oil and look that way

Yeah, clean it then you can tell. Oil migrates around especially on a truck where everything is exposed to highway speed air so give it a good cleaning then it should be obvious.

My 96 when I obtained it,
Was leaking\seeping oil from every were

After you Power wash front of engine
Start at top and move down

    -Valve cvr with half moons
-T cover gaskets($15 for gaskets but took me 4 days to takes off ness components to rectify leak)
That included oil pump/h20 pump/oil pan gasket.
-distributor O-ring (last part I installed)

funny, after all that work, still leaking bc I was waiting for distributor O-ring to arrive. Once I installed that……dry as a bone

Valve cover gasket, distributer o ring, timing chain tensioner gasket and oil filter housing gaskets for me. Went from a stinking oil mess to dry as a bone.

Most likely its the oil pump gasket its past time for that.

It could be front main seal, or the half moons just under the valve cover as close 2nd's.

IF it was front seal, most likely it would be all over that front main pulley.

You wont know until you clean it up and then watch for leaks.

Go to walmart and get you a squeeze bottle of that Gunk engine degreaser and a bag of rags.

I changed everything 2 years ago and I started leaking again. Hopefully it's only the valve cover bolts loosening up, it's coming from the top of the back end. The front and the valve cover sides are clean still.

That's exactly where mine was leaking from. First I thought it was the front diff, then the oil pan gasket... I was glad it was the oil pressure sender, pretty easy to replace.

I might need to check that part, I don't think I replaced that last time.

Thanks for the response guys. I promised my wife i would get our remodel done before i touched it. Purchased it from a good friend’s son but I dont think he done anything to it but drive it for the three years he owned it. After I bought it got a P0420 code so going clean throttle body and check the TPS. I felt like posting a photo would give me some direction on where to look for leak. I will definitely clean her up and find the leak. I had a gen 1 (2001) back in 2008. When I gave it to my son it had over 330,000 miles on it. He totaled it after 4 months. I then bought a 2007, 2019, 1988 and now this one. I love these trucks but really like the gen 1 trucks the best. I hope I dont regret selling the 88, to purchase this x cab. Never could get use to the reg cab on the 88 but it was a damn nice truck.

Cast exhaust manifold cracks caused my p0420, may want to look for that first. Replaced with ‘02 pipe style. Throttle clean and TPS won’t resolve that code but certainly won’t hurt the truck performance.

It had two codes. The one I meant to show was the P0120. I will definitely look for a cracked manifold.
