So I am probably crazy but can’t afford a new engine. 4 L Runs good but just uses water. Shop replaced waterpump and radiator and hoses then finally said it was a head gasket. Anything else I should do when it is apart chain tensioners? Head work?

Definitely do the chain and tensioners.
Water pump and thermostat would be a good idea too.
Might even throw on a belt tensioner since you’ll have easy access.

What year is your Tacoma? How many miles are on it?

He said it has 380k on the engine.
Which is a lot. I am surprised it doesn’t have timing codes yet.

Right, got it. Missed the title. Still interested to know what model year.

At 380K I'd be looking at a new timing chain, check and if need be adjust the valve lash as well. Check the valve/guide fitment, check the valve seats/head for proper sealing, etc. Probably other stuff that other people will chime in with.
380K (miles, I assume) is getting up there.

By the time you're done doing the HG, chain + guides, etc - you may as well look for a lower milage motor and see about swapping.
    Price is probably close enough.
