Hey, TW family... Have a Tundra question. I have a student who owns a 2005 tundra. He asked me about disabling the the ABS-said he has had a couple of instances where he has slid into things because of the brakes. Anyway, I know nothing about this and told him as much. I know that there are discussions about it but thought I would ask the collective. Ideas? direction? Cygnus???

Tell him to maybe drive a bit slower and plan further ahead?

I mean, like antilock doesn’t engage until the tire has already lost grip, right?

Tim said what I was thinking, he's not sliding into things cause of the brakes, he's overdriving the conditions!

Kids these days have no clue what life with no computers would be like.

Is he sliding into things because of the brakes, or because he's driving too fast for conditions?

Anyway, don't some people just pull the fuse?

I mostly agree with what others have said. 99% sure he'd be worse off without ABS.

Then again, some of the old Jeep XJs (specifically the ones with a Dana 35 rear if memory serves correctly) have some of the worst implementations of ABS known to human kind. But I bet Toyota engineers are smarter than Jeep engineers so there's that too.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Somewhere on this forum there is a mod for 2nd gens to put a DIY toggle switch on the dash to disable ABS on demand for offroading. Could do something like that too.

Fairly confident that unless the ABS is faulty, it's driver error, without knowing more information. If so, decrease speed, increase following distance, and have good tire tread/pressure.

This is of course the most reasonable answer yet given.

Also agree he’d be worse off without it. However, the 4runner abs, on rare conditions, will essentially release all brake pressure at very unfortunate times. It’s happened at very slow speeds with fresh dry/very cold snow is dusted over ice. You could argue that braking action would be nil in those conditions (and it nearly is), but I knew there was still deceleration to be had with locked tires plowing through the snow. It sucks feeling the abs let relieve all pressure at 1 or 2mph and basically roll into an intersection. Thankfully they were quiet intersections on the few times it's happened. Stepping really super hard on the brakes helped a little.

The kid will be worse off without it especially because of that truck. The ABS has only grabbing the back tires. That being said, he needs to slow down. He needs to have good tires. He also needs to have good brake fluid, good brake pads and rotors that aren't scored to hell.

The whole deal with the second gen mod was the second gen's are the ones that have some interesting lockup features or characteristics when making hard turns while also trying to brake in slippery conditions.

4Runner ABS is interesting and slippery conditions, especially at full lock while making a sharp turn. However, the shorter wheelbase makes you feel like it losing control in reality. It's most likely your tires just slipping a little bit. The thing is with breaking is that you never want to lock your wheels up and ABS prevents that. The most efficient breaking coefficient is the heavier wheels still spinning at 20% compared to braking power. This goes back to having good tires massively affects your ability to stop.

Short version is without knowing more. We can't give you a good answer but the best answer is no, do not disable ABS.

This is the situation he said was the biggest problem... almost at a stop and then into the building/garage/tree he goes.

Thank you all (for confirming what I said and was thinking) for the responses-TW never fails! I will let him read the response list and he can make his own decisions and plan of action.

Make his own decisions and plan of action? You mean he's going to be a responsible adult?

Hire that kid. He's got promise

If any of you guys in here are having issues with your stock head unit or if you are just someone who likes to have things up to date, I learned recently that you can update your stock head unit with a USB thumb drive so you can avoid a visit to the dealership. (The built-in over the air check for updates feature is useless because it said I was up to date but I was not) Should any of you be interested I will gladly explain how to do it
