I've had mine done for a couple months now. The power and throttle sensitivity is fine, it's the damn shift points. Traveling down a highway at 60 mph+ is great, but it's the lower speeds around town that drives me nuts. I'm going to see if he can get me in for a custom tune in January to see if we can changes these shift points and rpm settings. First and second gear is never a problem, it's always 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

I would get with OTT and see what they say. These tunes do not change shift points, line pressure, etc. directly. It does not have access to the TCU or transmission control unit. Changing the throttle mapping does affect the way she shifts but there is no direct control. At least this is my understanding. What throttle setting did you pick?

I will say this, you need to be easy on the throttle when you are on and off the pedal in- town or you will get the herky-jerky, especially if you are on the spicy side of the sensitivity setting. This is also true of the Pedal Commander on high sensitivity. There is almost a technique to it. I even manually select my gear at times to maintain the RPM I desire as the truck is programmed to try use the highest gear possible for MPG reasons.

One of the best things for your engine is to prevent LSPI, or low speed pre-ignition.This means manually getting the engine at the right rpm before romping on the throttle. Something that takes a little practice but becomes instinctive once you get the hang of it. I generally stage at 3500 rpm’s or so before I open her up if I am rolling and she is in a high gear. Or even 2500 rpm’s and then a moderate throttle acceleration. This makes a huge difference and helps keep your timing up; very helpful tuned or not. Something I leaned roll racing in my twin turbo… lol.

I honestly believe lowering your throttle sensitivity will help you a lot. Driving in “S” mode also helps in-town as the transmission tends to stay in a higher gear, especially if you don’t like to shift manually. Oh, and run premium fuel if you want that extra power. These engines thrive on high octane.

That is not entirely accurate for how we elect to tune the vehicles we support.

We do have the ability to change the shift points and line pressure directly and indirectly on the platforms we support. Every calibration we offer has a reworked shift schedule to some degree or another. On some platforms, we offer up to 3 unique transmission calibrations for that application depending on the user's needs/wants, which is why it's disappointing for someone to leave their tuning appointment with a calibration that did not fully meet their needs when it's possible for us to create a unique one-off shift schedule should that be what the user needs.

Another thing that I think is important to remember here is the generational/platform differences. All of these platforms use unique data. Talking about what your 2nd Gen Tacoma does has little relevance/bearing regarding 3rd Gen Tacoma.

I promise you I'm not trying to be difficult because it seemed to be fine before I left my appointment. But I only drove a short distance and it was at night so I was concentrating on where I was going more than what the truck was doing. I also didn't know that there were variations to the transmission calibration, I thought it just was what it was, which seem to be fine at the time. Anyway. Anyway. Like I said before, the throttle response and power and higher speed highway driving seems to be great, it's just the lower speed shift points. It tends to gear hunt between 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears. Want to set up another appointment to meet hopefully in January after the holiday season is over to see if. Maybe I can get it dialed in a little bit better.

Does the OTT tunes require switching to premium (91+) octane levels?

I've been considering this myself. My shudder gets worse as the fluid warms up/gets less viscous. I wonder if the additive helps correct for this

Oh, this is news to me. I would love to adjust mine a bit too. I was told by my tuner they he had no TCU access. Does this mean I can adjust my 3rd Gen? Apologies Justin, did not mean to give any misinformation. Just relaying what I was told.

Nope. I haven't tried the additive. Be interested in knowing if it helps though. Please provide an update when you get around to adding it.

I just want to send a shout out to Justin from OTT and Matt from CRS tuning. Incredible customer service and support. I made the 4 hour round trip from Alpharetta, GA to near Chattanooga, TN this morning to meet Matt. We did an update to my tune and some transmission tweaks. Could not be happier. If you are in GA or TN, very knowledgeable and helpful person. Highly recommend.

I was wrong about the TCU access, Matt explained this was certain 4Runner models. Probably some miscommunication when we did the initial as an 4Runner was being tuned as well. Anyway, pretty damn good mileage considering the temps (32 degrees) fuel type, terrain, and tires / lift. Round trip on 1/2 a tank. That timing is fire!

    Thank you!

I sincerely thank each of you who have supported OTT throughout this year and in preceding years. Your support has been a profound blessing; we do not take it for granted. Beyond the realm of business, it is my earnest hope that the closing days of 2023 provide you with the opportunity to have those special moments with your friends and family—the essence of what matters most.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Justin

    Happy New Year Everyone!

Today is the day! We're rolling out the OTT-CE calibration and taking the next step forward with 3G Tacoma Tuning. Starting today, all new clients of OTT will receive the new OTT-CE calibration. This provides you the peace of mind knowing the calibration installed has been certified to meet and exceed the standards required for EPA reasonable basis, earning OTT-CE 49-State compliance. Furthermore, OTT-CE calibration is currently CARB Pending. Giving our clients the first N/A 3G Tacoma calibration will be 50-state legal. This post will be updated to include CARB specific updates/changes once the EO has been awarded.

What does this mean for you, the 3G Tacoma owner?

    New Clients:
    • All New naturally aspirated 3G Tacoma clients will receive the OTT-CE calibration, as we will no longer offer 9.0 for sale to new clients.
    • We can make specific adjustments where required to suit the customer's needs/use of the vehicle, so we do have some flexibility.
    • We will only be supporting the latest Calibration ID for your ECU. If you are not on the latest Cal ID for your ECU, you must update via TechStream.
    • You will receive a printed Certificate of Compliance with the EPA Tampering Policy of 2020 and a sticker to place with the OEM Emission Sticker underhood, allowing your emissions technicians to go directly to SEMA's Database. Placement of the sticker is optional per SEMA requirements.
    • Anyone with the OTT-CE calibration will receive CARB documentation for their calibration at no additional cost once OTT is awarded CARB EO status. (More on this at a later date)
    • Updates to the OTT-CE calibration will be at no cost to the original end user.
    New Client Pricing:
    • OTT's MSRP pricing for the new file from our retailer network is $400-500 (location variance)
    • Retail pricing for a tune pack direct from OTT is $325 for the DIY'ers w/ VFTuner.
    • Self-Install kits with VFTuner and the OTT-CE tune pack is $724.

    Existing Clients:
    • We will no longer offer 9.0 for sale; however, we will continue to support legacy files w/ throttle changes, gear changes, AGM settings.
    • The OTT-CE update is not mandatory, but all future development will be directed through CE platforms.
    Existing Client Pricing:
    • There is a $50 charge to convert to the OTT-CE calibration.
