Is the low end torque better on 4th gen?

As title says, how is the low end performance on the new trucks?

I have a gen 3 which I bought in '16, and with the bigger tires, ECU tune, ECT always on, new 588" re-gearing it made it a bit better, but driving experience is not all that smooth and pleasurable. If I step on my gas pedal hard, my rear axle wraps (even with rear sway bars, yes, i know i need torsion bars to prevent axle wraps). Granted my truck is bit more heavier as I have lots of Li batteries and APUs for external power.

Just curious how the low end torque on the 4cyl with turbo experience for your new trucks?

 

Much better, the 3rd gen sucks at that.

 

I think peak torque is at 1700rpms. I think I have seen a few videos out there commenting on how good it is over the 3rd gen.

 

Short answer - yes, much better.

When I had a Travel Trailer I pulled it with a 2002 3/4 ton Suburban with an 8.1L gas engine. It made ~450lb-ft or so at its 3,200 RPM peak. The torque on that truck was fantastic.

The 4G iForce Max @ 465lb-ft @ 1,700 RPM IS big-block levels of torque.

The 4G turbo @ 317 ft-lb is quite good and will be more torque and much sooner than the 3.5L 265lb-ft at 4,600 RPM.

It shouldnt have the axle wrap you currently have if you get the coil spring version. And yes, it will have alot more torque juat off idle. I imagine the automatic will be neutered in 1st gear electronically.

The 4th gen will be much more enjoyable for any actual truck use. Daily driving will be improved as well.

Folks will say a tuned 3rd gen is great. Wait until a tuned 4th gen is available. Tunes on a turbo vehicle result in much greater gains than N/A.

 

I am not so sure you could count on tuning as they already had to dial back power a little from the manual models because of crankshaft hammering.

 

There are already several tunes available for this engine. 55hp with a simple jb4 tuner. Where did you hear the crankshaft hammering story? Just curious. I imagined it was the clutch or manual tranny itself.

 

I own an 11th gen (current gen) civic. That 1.5L turbo engine gets 50hp and 50 TQ with just a tune. That's with a weak CVT transmission. Proven reliable.

I'd imagine a larger engine and larger turbo Tacoma will get that or more without any fuss.

 

Tacoma hybrid/turbo putting out 465 ft lbs of TQ. Maybe the manual is a problem, but the auto 8 speed is capable of handling the extra power.

 

Since they haven’t elaborated, we don’t even know what “crankshaft hammering” is, nor if it’s an overall power limiting issue or an NVH target issue.

since it involves shifting the torque curve upward a bit, it seems most likely to be an NVH/driveability thing at low rpm

 

I think I saw that only the auto 4th will develop peak tq at 1700, manual is at 2800 rpm’s, I think I saw that somewhere on a YouTube video

 

Never owned a 3rd gen huh? New 4th gen MT is less HP and a bit more tourqe in higher RPM's as well. Also, thousands more... I am trying to hold my judgement till I drive one, but with prices, I will be a full size. More hauling, more towing, bigger and bot much more money, no brainer.

 

This will be same as how 3rd gen is better than 2nd gen, and how 2nd gen is better than 1st gen. I am pretty sure that engine will be no different than what's inside current highlander.

 

Yeah I owned a 2018 Tacoma TRD offroad 4x4 for 2 years. Then sold it for the same $ I paid for it. They are good trucks, I just didn't like the 3.5L and auto trans it had.

 

fyi, that has been improved since 2018. My 2021 is much more enjoyable than the 2017 I had. It drove me nuts.
