Yamaha is betting CDs will make a comeback, apparently. They just released this: https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/hifi_components/cd-c603/index.html

I'm sure it's excellent - every piece of Yamaha audio gear I have is solid. When I was in high school, I had one of these Pioneer 25-disc changers:

$550??? I threw a barely used 5 disc changer in the trash a few years ago because no one wanted it and it hadn’t been used in years. I don’t think I’ve used a CD in at least 15 years. It’s been a while since we’ve used any DVDs too.

Yup, costs more than my living room A/V receiver.

I still have some CDs and Vinyl, but I don't own a turntable or dedicated CD player/changer anymore.

I have some Dahlquist DQ-20 speakers stored away that my old boss gave me - he gave them to me in the original boxes and had bought them new in the early 90s. They're supposed to be incredible speakers. I don't have anything to power them with - the consensus seems to be 200 watts per channel minimum, and they apparently work great with tube amps. Some day if I finish the basement I might have them refurbished, pick up something that'll drive them, and get a nice turntable then set it all up down there. I've offered them back to him since I hate that they're just sitting dormant, but he hasn't taken me up on that. I think I found the woofers need to be refoamed, but there's a company on Long Island that will refurbish these and has extra parts like feet and terminals.

I think there's a price tag still on the boxes - I want to say you're correct at around $1000 a piece. That's a lot of money for a college kid to spend on speakers 30 years ago.

I tried them with a 100 WPC receiver once and it was clear they weren't getting enough power. From what I understand, they punched well above their price point.

Friend is an audiophile and sold a set of super high end five figure speakers to a guy in Indianapolis. They were something like 6' by 2' by 3 inches, more of a diaphragm than a cone. Anyway, the length meant no UPS, truck freight at $800. Well, we were driving our Odyssey out to Indy for the 500 so we took them with us. Buyer ran the satellite truck for the local NBC affiliate and gave me boxes of media swag for doing it...jackets, all sort of stuff.

When my Onkyo receiver crapped out, I replaced it with a Yamaha. To me it sounds just as good. The only thing the Onkyo did over the Yamaha was being able to watch analog sources over HDMI. Supposedly it just needs new capacitors.

I don't regularly listen to the CDs themselves. I just copy them to my computer. I'll encode the music to mp3/m4a for the car stereo. I think my 4Runner is the last model year to include a CD player. I use it on occasion.

I still like having a physical product for my purchase. I don't have to worry if my downloads are DRM protected or tied to a service. I've also heard of cases where people have bought lossless or high-res tracks only to find out they're upsampled.

I've read that the Washington Bridge situation has greatly improved, with two lanes on the east bridge now dedicated to west bound traffic. Have you found that to the the case ?

My Christmas travels will bring me to SE MA, and my usual route is round-trip over that bridge.

I have hit or miss results at best there for DVDs, it's more an afterthought for me.

I wanted one of those 25s when my single disc croaked about 15 years ago but couldn't find it, had to settle for a 100 plus 1 Pioneer. I think Yamaha is wise as audiophiles will still play the discs.

    Damn where was I haha

I still have the trifecta of records, tapes, CDs. Nuff said. Those speakers sound badass. I have the $30 Technics 3 way cabs I got in college. Still good but a little wide for the room..old house, old house headaches. I rarely get to really blast it anymore though..women.

I have a Pioneer 200 watt. So old it doesn't even have the Dolby Pro Logic option. Haha..not that I could do home theater in my house anyway. Running a Pioneer CD changer and Teac dual tape deck.

I own 2 burned discs that I didn't purchase physically..a Dope DOD album and a Black Flag live album. Common thread, they weren't released physically at least not when I got them. I did burn backups of my rare and expensive stuff, plus made a flash drive in 2021 when my rental didn't have a CD player with some essentials..Slayer, Coroner, Danzig..

100%. It's worse than it was before (a) construction began almost 2? Years ago, and worse than when the bridge was open through construction. But it's "marginally" worse. East bound traffic got throttled down a lot, west bound is about the same.

Watch out east bound. The left lane becomes the right lane and the right lane ends when it opens up to 4 lanes again. Because THAT makes sense

Nah you'll be fine. It's congested during commute and excepted heavy use times. Not a big surprise there.

It's going. Sore(no surprise). Mostly mental at this point..
Post op on the 26th, so, hopefully get this thing off my arm, as they need to remove the stitches anyway. It's causing me more aggravation than anything else. Fingers are all mobile. Can't DO anything yet, not even open a zip lock. But... in time.
And more importantly got through it w/o taking any of these oxies
