They are shitting on it because they want one since it's better than their current Tacoma.

Not shitting on it, think people are just disappointed in the direction they went with the hybrid. People have been complaining for decades about the dismal fuel economy the Tacoma gets, how many threads in the 3rd Gen section are on the subject? Here was a chance to improve it greatly, yet they didn’t…went for power bragging rights instead.

    GM 1500 3.0 diesel 460 ft/lbs tq, 4WD, 23 city/25 comb/29 hwy.

Heavier truck than the Taco too. About the same price as the Taco hybrid, might be able to get one a touch cheaper… (less hype)

Edit: quickie google search, here is one for $54K +/-

Did you forget the part where diesel costs like 35% more per gallon than gas? Plus your extra oil change cost, plus your DEF fluid cost.
So unless it is getting over 31 highway, it is costing more per mile to drive that thing than the normal 2.4T Tacoma.

Yup. You may save $200-300 a year on fuel but with that initial $3K upcharge it is going to take 10-15 years to break even.

It’s also thousands cheaper than the hybrid Tacoma will be. That will buy a lot of diesel.

You’d be making this same post lamenting how underpowered and not tough it was if it made way less power and got 28mpg highway

A car is a depreciating asset. You're constantly losing money on it regardless, even if you don't drive it. Point being, you'll never break even. Buy the car that you WANT to drive.

Most people are getting over 30 mpg, and we are comparing the hybrid Tacoma here. What is that going to cost, $60K+? Considering the prices we are seeing with the non-hybrid. Went on the Toyota site and built a DCLB OR 4WD with the $10K premium package, it came to $55K.

So cost of ownership might be a wash. The real benefit here is the range. Chevy has a 22 gal tank, that is 660 miles if it is getting 30 mpg.

The hybrid taco is rumored to be 23 Hwy, with an 18 gallon tank. 414 range. According to my fuzzy math.

I’m talking about breaking even on fuel costs not on the value of the vehicle.

Nah, not a power hungry person. Have stated it many times, much rather have better efficiency that all out power. Don’t drive fast, speed limit everywhere and not much in a hurry to get there.

There is a reason I consistently get halfway decent mileage in my 3G. Drive like there is an egg under the pedal. This picture was taken 12/20/23.

yes it is! It generally gets raving reviews. The interior sure is a heck of a lot better than the Tacoma or Tundra.

what narrative? Simply pointing out there is a way to get better fuel efficiency, it might be cheaper cost of ownership, even with the extra consumables. Toyota does have a diesel hybrid available for the new Land Cruiser (overseas market) , be real curious what type of fuel economy it achieves.

Would have much rather seen the hybrid taco get better mpgs, PHEV would have been icing on the cake. However not the case, plus they made the fuel tank smaller. It is like a kick in the nuts. No real gains on mpg, plus a smaller tank, ummm ok???

iForce is 19/23 and the iForce Max is only 22/24 so maybe 2 MPG gain at best. I suppose it depends on what the premium is for the hybrid, but probably not worth the up charge for most buyers. That said, I'd consider one down the road if they are eventually discounted like the Tundra iForce Max hybrids currently are around here.

10 least reliable vehicles according to consumer reports:
    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sfHiC7RF-GU
Surprised the Nissan Frontier is in there.

Meanwhile, in CR's 10 most reliable list, Toyota cleaned up, with 7 in the top 10.
