Exactly. It took me a while to get it and obviously most others don't. If you are building a clean slate EV assist or PHEV for an off-road truck application, you want the motor in series with the ice and before the transmission and transfer case so you can take advantage of those systems just like the ICE does. This form factor lends itself to a broad range of capabilities based on how much and for how long you provide electric energy to the motor. Throw a solid-state battery and charging options into the equation and it's a game changer.

The Cummins lawsuit shows why Toyota was smart to pull their diesel offerings from the US market. It's no secret the EPA wants to get rid of diesel in the US. Cumins spent billions developing clean diesel technology only to get shafted. Of course, the way I presented it was clearly just to fuck with you. :D

All I'm saying is that many people who might have opted for a hybrid Tacoma won't. They'll either get the gas version or something else altogether. No doubt some will happily pay the hybridization upcharge for greater acceleration, but this niche might be smaller than the group of buyers Toyota could have captured with a more efficient hybrid powertrain. I imagine they must have something else in the works like a PHEV.

What will they get instead that gets meaningfully more MPG?

Speaking for myself, I'll just hold tight with what I have, with the expectation that better truck/SUV electrification options are coming soon (but maybe not from Toyota).

Horrid design idea for a ev truck. Ideally you would have 3 or 4 motors for an ev truck. More room for batteries. Look at rivians layout. That's most ideal.

This Toyota design is not intended to be pure EV IMO. It's designed for some hybrid variation. And my point is we are evaluating it based on the one of many possible implementations we see today. If you throw in a battery of similar physical size, with a much larger storage capacity, it expands the potential. The retention of the ICE (hybrid) makes the maximum range a moot point for getting to the destination where you plan to venture into the boondocks fully loaded. At the same time a PHEV variant could mean you run mostly electric during your daily commute during the week.

Not always. I sold my 2019 Corvette Grand Sport for more than I paid for it. Rare, but it happens.

I'd like to know how many hybrid Tacomas Toyota plans to sell. You're stuck with the hybrid in the Pro and Trailhunter all of those will be hybrid. Toyota's current hybrid system still seems as if there isn't much demand for it from Tacoma customers.

Have the MPGs for the OR MAX and the Pro been "released"?

Sorry, didn't mean to offend. Besides that was all pure speculation by me that could be 100% wrong.

As long as the extra battery weight doesn’t blunt performance too much, and it maintains a noticeable performance & mpg advantage over the 2.4T, and….after this new pricing paradigm shift settles in, getting an equipped hybrid under 60k might look like pretty good deal.

We already know that a stripped down “Land Cruiser” badged version of Tacoma’s platform with manual cloth seats will be minimum 55k, not including delivery, tax, markup. So if someone could get the identical truck w added versatility of a bed plus options for a similar price, is that not now a “good deal”?

Should have did that from the get go, instead of catering to the chest thumping bros. They way it is now is nothing more than a dick measuring contest. But oh well.

Toyota never really had diesel offerings in the US on a grand scale, few years in the 80s but that was it. They aren’t all that innocent either, from lobbying the US government to push back the EV mandates to greenwashing, which they were fined for the latter.

Ohhh, know you were fucking with me, I can’t be offended, I used to hold a flashlight for my dad… :p

$60K for a midsize truck doesn’t look like good deal at all. So many other options at that price point. Do wonder when the truck bubble is going to burst.

It already has. Sales numbers for Q1 2024 should be interesting for Toyota.

Yep, just starting to slide looking at full-size truck prices.

Think the initial quarter will be high, since it is “Oh look! New! Shiny!” end of the year might not meet projections. We will see.
