Anybody have a ball park figure on what replacing a pair of rear shocks should cost? I'm talking about OEM or equivalent, nothing fancy.

    Thanks.

    Rudolph the red nosed Taco
    Had a very shiny CEL
And if you saw his dashboard
You would say "What the hell?"

    All of the other Tacos
Used to laugh and call him names
    They never let poor Rudolph
    Forget about his rusty frame

    Then one foggy Christmas Eve
    Santa came to say
"Rudolph with your CEL so bright
Won't you tow my sleigh tonight?"

Then all the Tacos loved him
And they shouted out with glee
    Rudolph the red nosed Taco
They'll replace your frame for free!

I'd guess $700? That's what I was quoted on my little beast before I did the new frame

That's what I would do, to all the local outlets. Maybe local newspapers as well.

I was quoted $500.00 at a non dealer shop that specializes in Toyota and Honda. That's down in the Austin area. I thought that was high. Maybe I'm underestimating the cost of parts and labor. I did plenty of rear shocks in my younger days and the Taco uses the same sort of set up.

You can get some KYB rear shocks from rock auto for $90-$110 a pair and then an hour of a labor from a shop I would say

So depending on shop labor rate and parts matrix markup, I'd say around to sub $300

That's kind of what I thought. I might shop this around a bit. The shop that quoted that did an oil change and also suggested flushing and replacing the brake fluid. Both were reasonable I thought, but the quote for the shocks seemed high. They get good reviews on Yelp and other places and are busy, so maybe they charge a premium.

Yea it all depends. Could ask what their labor rate is, not sure how much they mark up parts

I can calculate their labor rate from the invoice.

Most likely there is a rust charge in there as well. With miles on the truck they know they are likely to run into challenges getting the old parts off and that can cause extra time and therefore extra money.

"Rust charge" isn't a thing in Texas, especially South Texas.

My mistake. I thought in reading the various posts that the repair was being made in Mass.

I have had them on my truck for years, as well as had staties pull up along side of me while on the highway and give me the "thumbs up." Whoever pulled you over either must have been a rookie cop with his Sargent next to him or just a plain old right wad douche Magouche. Regarding the ticket, call the "ticket clinic."

Just do it yourself. It’s only two nuts on each shock. Very simple.

If you were in Corpus, I'd send ya to my BiL. He'd take care of ya. I don't know anyone in Austin anymore, at least that does mech work.

I saw the aftermath of this accident on route 2 this morning. Looks like the car hit the beginning part of a section of guardrail and peeled the door panels completely off and spun out facing the wrong direction.

I don't think it is because the truck isn't that old and doesn't have that much rust on it. OTOH, when my daughter moved down here with her 2000 4Runner, the mechanic that worked on it said he'd never seen so much rust.

Their labor rate is $112.00/hour. I don't know how that compares to the dealer rate or what the dealer mark up on parts is. Or theirs for that matter.

As for doing it myself, I don't have the jack or jack stands any longer. I have the tools and knowledge as I did that sort of thing in my younger day.

Rear shocks you don't need a jack. Just need to be able to compress the shock by hand or cut the strap and guide it in the ears for the bolt. It's a stem on the frame side (bushings and a nut) and just a nut and bolt on the bottom (axle side).

$112/hr for labor is pretty cheap by today's standards
