First time problem with our 2005 Tacoma. Drove to the store earlier today, no issues. Left the house tonight and the 4x4 light was flashing red (it's been quite a while since I used 4WD). Tried engaging 4H and the green 4x4 light started flashing, along with the red light. Switch back to 2H and the green light flashes a few more times, then stops, but the red light keeps flashing. The steering feels a bit tight (but not excessive) like maybe the driveline is binding up. I tried backing up & swerving but nothing changed.

I started reading the 4WD System Operation thread but no luck yet. I'll keep reading. Appreciate any insight to help me get this right again. Thanks, guys.

The red light is the rear locker, check to make sure the diff lock switch isn't depressed.

Thank you! I officially feel like a blithering idiot. I must have hit the diff lock when reaching for the fog light switch (or something). Forgot all about the diff lock and was focused on 4WD instead. You just saved me a lot of reading & a lot of frustration.

Glad you got it figured out. FWIW- some people recommend activating 4WD once a month to keep the actuator from getting stuck.

Yep, I agree. Guess I sometimes get lazy, plus it's been awhile since I've been off-pavement -- and I won't engage 4WD on pavement (unless it's snowing) ;).
