Definately need/want one! Backing a heavy trailer up a ramp with super tall reverse kills my clutch..

Has anyone replaced just the reverse gear in these? Different subject I know...

I know guys re-gear to run bigger tires with lifts. I've never read/heard anything about re-gearing just reverse gear. Not even sure that's possible?

Wise One of the Wrench , possible Sir?

The 3 gears necessary (main shaft, lay shaft , and idler, in the case) would all have to be redesigned.
The rev gear on the left top is machined with the shaft. A new shaft would have to be manufactured and then the other two gears would have to be redesigned (if there was room in the case to begin with).
The “box” is the only viable way to change rev ratio.

I don't use my 2LO mod all the time but when I need it, it's fantastic.

Toyota could have easily included it as a built-in OEM function since it's just a matter of changing some relay/actuator logic. I suspect the reason they left it out was to try to reduce the mental workload / confusion potential for the average customer. (4 separate modes vs. 3 modes.) Some people would inavdertently select "2LO" when they meant "4LO," get stuck or lose control somewhere off road, then blame Toyota for it.

I now finding myself needing one of these as I live in the steep mountains with snow. If these come around again, I'm looking for one.

You may be partially correct, but I seem to remember Ford said specifically in the owners manual not to operate my F150 in 4x4 without the manual hubs engaged.

I also remember it said something about catastrophic failures not covered under warranty. It makes sense too, some yahoo inadvertently stands on the gas in 4 lo to be cool and bam, he's blown the ring in pinion with a double dose of torque. :boom:

Edit; I now remember a guy in high school that had a nice CJ, and he use to do wheelies in 2lo 2wd off the speed bumps in the parking lot.

Right, that's a good point, forgot about the torque & engineering side of it.

If it's in 2LO, all the torque has to go through the rear diff + driveshaft + axles alone, so it's best to use good judgment and not punch the throttle.

Yea same with just about everything, if your using it to do things far beyond what it was designed for then odds are something is going to break but if your using it for what most people got it for (making it easier to back up a trailer with a manual trans or to be able to idle along very slowly) your most likely not going to hurt anything.

All probably true but catastrophic failures can still occur using 4WD as well. I seem to recall someone on here destroying a diff/axles on an icy driveway.

Lesson of the day. Keep encouraging all your Jeep friends to punch it in 2Lo in the parking lots.
