10 Reasons I'm not Rushing Out to Buy

No doubt the 2024 G4 Tacoma is appealing on several levels, but when you peel back the layers, there's good reason to stay put if you like your G3. Here are my 10 reasons in no particular order. Of course if something happened to my '21, I would look at a new one.

    1. MPG - According to Fuelly, the 2.4L Turbo Lexus 350 averages 19.8 mpg, the '22 Tacoma 3.5 V6 gets 18.8 on regular 87-Octane which leads to #2:

    2. Fuel type. Opinions seem to be mixed whether the 2.4L runs well on 87-Octane and if it does indeed need 91, any gains in MPG are mitigated.

    3. Rear Seat still looks too small for adults or kids over 5 years old.

    4. Pricing - between the MSRP and expected stealership mark-ups, G4 becomes expensive which leads to # 5:

    5. Tundra - Tundras are being discounted and one could buy a lower level trim for less than a new Tacoma.

    6. Dashboard - the current screen is well integrated in the dash and never felt it needing to be larger. The G4 looks like an iPad hot-glued to the dashboard that protrudes above the dashboard level.

    7. Operating at Sea-level - turbo engines find their utility and power advantage over NA at elevation. Living at sea-level, I'm less likely to see as big a gain in performance.

    8. Durability - no crystal ball here, but all things being then same, a NA V-6 is a simpler design than 4-cyl turbo and should be more durable.

    9. Year-1 - based on personal experience with significant issues with a year-1 2017 Ridgeline, it is wise to let the manufacturer shake out the bugs.

    10. No $ owed - from the school of Warren Buffet, why take on debt?

I'm not singing sour grapes, and if I needed a truck, I would definitely look at the new Taco, but replacing one that's been dependable and serves me well doesn't make a lot of sense. My 2 cents!

Why do you think we care if you buy a new one or not? What is the point of this post exactly?

First reason: Consumers should stop participating in outrageous pricing. Paying $60k for a truck not $40k-more-capable than a good used 2nd Gen is wasted money.

that's not right. The turbo will provide lots of benefits at every altitude. The only difference is the turbo will work a little easier at lower elevations; but turbo'd engines generally 'make their own atmosphere'. At higher elevations the turbo will be working harder to generate the same pressure (because the atmosphere is less dense) but it will always get to the prescribed pressure.

...paying half a million for a $200,000 house is also ridiculous.

Absolutely is. And paying $1.6M for a half a million dollar house (after 30 years) is even worse. :-/

Per post 3, why would you expect it to have a bigger back seat in the first place?

Another “I’m not buying a 4g” thread. Cool story bro. Don’t buy it then.

It’ll still sell like hotcakes despite the increased pricing. That’s just what vehicles cost nowadays, and people way pay it to have the latest and greatest.

Personally, I’m perfectly happy with my 3rd gen. Might consider trading in for a Hybrid 4g in like 5 years, but we’ll see.

I bet if you are patient you will see dealers selling below MSRP. I would not be in a rush to buy one unless the powertrain is worth it.

If they would of put in the V8 from the Lexus GX460. I would buy one 100%. Turbo 4 meh.. Looks like im keeping my 2015 forever.

If the Tacoma was more of a truck than the previous one that would be a huge bonus to upgrade but its not. The Hilux is more of a truck than the Tacoma is unfortunately. In America people just care about screen size and infotainment seems like.

Sorry but this needed a thread? Sounds like someone needs to justify not having the newest taco, saw this happen with the 3rd gen, and just like then it wont be long before everyone will be rushing out to buy one here in a few months after they realize its a nice upgrade.

The paltry MPG increase for the '24 was a buzzkill... Nice looking truck - but no wonder the MPG only recently came out. If it was significant improvement w/ 4 cyl they would've led w/ it, even in only general terms.

Lol, let me recap- cries about a bunch of speculative issues then states a Tundra can be purchased for the same price as the new Tacoma but fails to realize all the same speculative issues “exist” with the tundra.

Is it just me or are a bunch of you sitting around trying to talk yourself out of buying the new Tacoma? As someone who own a 24’ Tundra the iForce max is an amazing engine and I love the truck… no doubt the Tacoma will be the same. If you are scared of new platform or can’t afford it then don’t buy it… no one if forcing you to

I buy a new truck when I need a new truck, not when a manufacturer comes out with a new truck. If it works out it works. The mental gymnastics in posts like this is something though. To each their own.
