285/70r17 barely fits under

Give it a shot, only you can be the judge. I even tried to fit my 35 in there without any research. That was a complete failed but I had to see for myself.

The spare compartment is the same size. Just the bed is a tad longer.

 

Yeah, the plan is to try and stuff it in there today.

 

I’m sure it’s mentioned earlier in this thread, but if you’re not flattening the forward arms or relocating the hoist, just be sure to pull the tire rearward as you lift it so that you clear the diff, and watch the proximity to the tailpipe (edit: to avoid it rubbing on the exhaust. I also have experienced no ill effects from tailpipe heat on my spare).

 

My tire is about 1/4” away from the exhaust, had it like that for about 2 years. No heat shield (Borla exhaust).

Only issue was when I was driving for hours on FSRs and the tire shifted closer to exhaust and got a very minor mark from the exhaust. I re-tightened the spare and it has been fine ever since.

You can fit a 285, 255 or whatever tire you purchase…will it clear the rear axle pumpkin though? If you’re stuffing it, check that clearance. A misplaced/oversized spare can cause some serious issues(physically limiting axle movement due to size/obstruction). Adjusting the spare tire mount(winch system) aft 1” will fix the axle impediments issue(285 largest I’ve tested). The composite bed will not accept vertical impacts without cracking, think axle impact spare, spare has no where to flex/go besides vertically into the composite bed.

 

It's the same. The space is in front of the axle.

 

Finally got around to doing this. Relocated the hoist and pounded on the tabs a little. 295/70r17 fits with air.

 

I may attempt the relocate this week for my spare. if you can fit that size then i'll see how much is left for a 255/85/17 MT Baja Boss

 

Hardest part is actually getting a wrench and booger hooks to the bolt heads for the hoist.

 

This project is why I purchased ratcheting box wrenches. I read on here that they were suggested, but this task was a bear even with the right tool…

 

I left the stock spare tire. Yes I’m running 33” tires however stiock tire will work fine in an “emergency”. A spare is to save your AS* . I do keep spare lug nuts with me as my 33’s have different lugs. Most cars use donuts so not worried.

 

Around town, I can agree. Did the same. But in the chance I have a flat somewhere 4 wheel drive is required, I’d rather have a full size just so parts all work together seamlessly.

 

I have a 235/85R16 on an OEM steel rim as the spare on both of our Tacomas. 32” OD is the same as 3 of the 4 tire sets we use. (265/75/16, 265/70/17 and 235/85/16)
If I manage to mess up one of my summers (255/85/16) it’s close enough to get me to the nearest tire shop.
If you don’t include the spare in your rotation, anything reasonably similar in size is fine. If I recall correctly, some of the trims on the 2024 Tacos are going with “donut” spares. Saves weight and fuel.

 

looks like it’s almost riding on the exhaust… are you cooking the tire? I want to put a 285/17 there.. but worry about destroying it.

 

This has come up a lot when this is discussed and while it is pretty close to the exhaust, it isn’t an issue IMO. I haven’t had a problem, but I do a 5 tire rotation. If something does happen to the spare being that close after more than 5k miles no one has shared the experience here yet.
The heat that far back on the tailpipe isn’t enough to damage a tire, but that hasn’t stopped people from adding heat shields to put their concerns to rest
