Have you changed your tranny or differential fluid?

And if so at what mileage for each. This applies to manual trans and to differential only. Thanks.

 

Tranny Fluid at around 175k. No negative results. Differential in 2024

 

Changed differential fluid at 60k and 120k miles. Will do again at 200k miles (using Amsoil long life).

 

Your owners manual should offer guidance.....

Yes. Have changed both. I’ve used amsoil and been happy.

 

I did my front and rear diffs at 35k then at 70k. Fluids looked good when it was done. I used mobil 1.
My tranny fluid was changed at 40k at the dealer when they changed the torque converter. I am at 80k I might do it at 100k.

 

Transmission at 100k
Rear Differential at 60k when the axle seal blew out
Front diff when I did the rear diff. at 60k
And then the front diff again at 130k when the needle bearing went out.

Don't be like me.
Do the diffs at 30-50k
and the trans at 60k

I was more interested in learning about member's experiences and practices.

 

Trusting a roomful of internet strangers vs guidance from the engineers that designed the equipment isn't always the best move.

That said, I'll offer my personal method for drive line lubricants.

Light duty, ie mostly highway use, follow the book.

Lots of short trips, in town hooning, moderate towing or off road use, cut the OCI in half or switch up to synthetic and still follow the book on mileage

Thrashing, switch to syn, cut OCIs in half.

I never use boutique lubricants, just OTC items of the proper viscosity and GL rating.

Exception. Kind of. I use a Ford SVO lubricant in manual boxes. It's expensive and some would call it boutique. But it solved a few notchy shifting issues I had when in the moment of Solo II competitions.

 

Trans, diffs, & transfer case I did the first at 15k and 2nd at 65k all Redline oils, so 50-60k intervals.

It never gets old reading the comments on transmission fluid change question.
I had a Lexus GX470. I asked my dealer multiple time to change my transmission fluid and they always refused and told me that it is sealed and have lifetime fluid in it. I sold it when it had 120k and never had any problem with it. I recently saw a GX470 that got 520k and still has the original engine and transmission, they never changed the transmission fluid, and runs as smooth as a new Lexus.
You also see a transmission that fail prematurely even though it had been maintained regularly.
My 2012 Tacoma torque converter was making grinding noise while the truck is stopped but in gear. It had 40k. Dealer told that they have seen this on Camrys but not tacomas. I never abused it.
Do whatever you feel comfortable with because you are not going to get a clear answer.
In my book, noting is lifetime. Off-roading, towing, hard driving, all play a role. Some people have bad driving habits like throw the car in park while still moving or throw it in D while still reversing. This also true when taking about manual transmissions. So the driver plays a major role too.

 

OP has a manual. Fluid changes are simple and useful.
