I have a 22 SR with access cab. it was bought where it does not have any flair the reason is I want to have a functional truck that isn't attracting thieves due to have a high end model or things on or in the truck.
what I have done is a bed mat, Tonneau Cover, running boards. added in fog lights

What modifications are functional and discrete?

for example I am looking at this hidden winch set up

A bigger list, for "what if" ... https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-mods-tips.428840/

De-chroming ... badges, door handles, fenders, radio knobs

If you offroad, skid plates rattle-canned black are low-key and sliders painted back

    Window tint

Ditch lights do not need to be chrome ... paint black and only turn on as needed.

Upgraded tail-lights look cool and add functionality and may occasionally generate "where did you get that?" from other Tacoma owners.

Bed racks and roof-racks will likely draw questions from someone, like RTTs. Basically any external storage/RTT components that change the truck profile cannot help but attract attention.

The LED tail light conversion from VLEDS was one of the best mods I did to my Taco. And it’s totally inconspicuous.

I did not mean the OP needs skid plates or upgraded tailights, just that some items are functional without being flashy.

Bedstiffeners are function if used to carry items regularly are are low-key.

But overall ... yes, quite functional already off-the-lot.

Big Orkin Pest Control decals on the door. Then you can add bed rack and Decked storage with impunity

i would really recommend the sdhq hidden winch mount over that iteration specifically for the added recovery points below the winch cradle. either ends up with the same visual appearance once everything is said and done though.

a super light front windshield tint (ceramic/uv blocking), sound deadening, new budget speakers (stock headunit still, super easy. i went with powerbass on sale), and good tires go a long way on a stock truck

    and keep the interior clean

switchpro in the factory left pocket is hot and very unobtrusive. Also if you are into GMRS or HAM you can pick up a remote mount unit and wire up the handheld to a passthrough plug on an unused button. just toss it in the glove box when you arent using it. works awesome
