Looks like a lot of work to me.
Maybe some goo-gone and fresh coat of wax?
I to this day haven’t found a good bug and tar remover.

I took a shower less than an hour hour ago and discovered that I had to turn it all the way up just to get it barely warm enough for me; I mentioned this to my parents after I was finished. My dad went down to the basement and found that the water heater was leaking. We have no idea what is wrong, but I'm guessing it's shot and will have to be replaced. The water heater is about eight years old...

A leaky water heater led to this for me, took me about 3 weeks to tear everything out and replace.

Yep I heated water up on the stove and poured it over myself for 3 weeks to shower, it sucked! That was a helluva lot of work, the flooring, beams, and walls were all damaged or ruined, also had the furnace/AC removed and replaced during that stretch too as the unit sits beside the water heater.

that’s about average depending on your water quality.

When we rented three houses on the island of Kuaui in Hawaii for my cousin's wedding back in 2009, I remember that one of the houses had a water heater from 1987 if I'm remembering correctly. Our last house was built in 2007 and had hard water, and the water heater blew in either late 2015 or early 2016, forcing my parents to spend a pretty penny right before they sold it. This house was built in 2016 and has no hard water that I'm aware of. The townhouse we lived in before, where the water heater last just shy of nine years, should have had a water softener.

Is your water heater propane like the heat, or is it electric?

hardness does impact but also the iron content has an affect too, do you have any kind of filtration system in the house? Well or city water?

Public water, public sewer, and public natural gas heat (water heater and stove are gas too); there is a humidification system for the downstairs HVAC, but no idea about a filtration system for the water heater...
