Accessory mode won’t turn off

Unplug all the USB from the charging port and leave the battery Unplug for a day or two. Then mine starts right back up to normal again.

 

I hope that does it. I don’t have anything plugged into the OEM USB ports. Thanks!

 

Just following this thread, but with the same problem. Its a 2003 with no USB ports (hell, I have a cassette deck).

The auxillary electric functions come back on after leaving. I leave the truck and everything is turned off, and come back and the radio is on.

I assume its a problem with the ignition key cylinder, or a relay. Would appreciate suggestions from those who may have seen something similar.

There are some significant differences between the 1st and 3rd gen Tacoma's. I'd recommend you post in the 1st gen section of these forums.

 

Exact same thing started happening to me today. It might've happened before replacing my battery (hence why it died - I had a spare battery ready to go with no jumper/donor vehicle available). Not sure how to fix it. Saw the suggestion to unplug all the USB and unhook the battery... here's hoping that works.

Any other solutions / troubleshooting others have done?

UPDATE: Pulled my IG2 relay to confirm if it was stuck closed, it was not. I tried starting the truck with the relay pulled just to make sure there was no other power coming in to the truck from something else (I only have the one battery). It was not, and the truck didn't start. My best guess is this somehow reset something in the system, because next I put my relay back in and everything works just fine. So... take that for what you will.

 

This just appeared out of nowhere on my 2017 sport dclb. Took it to my mechanic and no codes. Zero mods on it. Appeared about 2 days ago out of absolutely nowhere. It is like it's stuck in accessory mode or lost the key fob "connection." Did someone try and steal my key fob frequency w/ one of those black market hacking tools?!?! Cause it even blew away my mechanic lol. Got a new battery in the fob too. Trying to knock everything out before I go to my dealership and get ram rodded for them to rekey it.

Truck started doing this again. Happened middle of the day, seemingly out of nowhere. Only reason I knew it happened is because my phone tried to play my music through my truck out front.

My previous "fix" didn't work. Tried fixing by pulling all IG fuses, ECU fuses, Radio fuses... no luck. Unhooked the only accessory wires (ditch lights) going to the battery. No result.

Unhooked the battery for now so it doesn't murder it.

Any new suggestions from folks?

Bigred503 - I see your other comment, I unplugged what was in my cigarette lighter outlet... we'll see.

 

Anything plugged in to the cig lighter ports? Had a similar issue with my GoPro charging from the cig lighter port. It was keeping the truck on for some reason.

 

I unplugged what I have in there (monitors battery voltage + 2 USB-A ports). I hope it works, but then I'll be upset if it does because I've not had this issue before on my other Tacoma with the same device. Good to hear, though, that that multiple people are suggesting this.

 

For those sitting on the edge of their seats about my issue, I'll put my (temporary?) solution here. it's clearly a relay issue, but I'm not sure exactly which one.

I pulled my IG2-MAIN, EF1-MAIN NO.1, EF1-MAIN NO.2, and HORN relays. Meanwhile my door was open so that I could hear if any of them would disconnect power to whatever it was why my accessory mode wasn't turning off. If I have to do this again (I hope not), I would close the door and reopen it after every relay, because I think one of these was the culprit. The beeping never stopped.

I tried to start the truck in hopes to reset any energy states for relays (door still open). As expected, the truck didn't start (IG2 relay was pulled). I plugged in IG2-MAIN again to get the truck to start. It again didn't start (probably because the MAINs were removed). After this, I closed the door, and cycled through accessory mode. I opened the door, and it seemed resolved. Plugged in the three remaining relays, and the truck seems to work just fine.

So there's a relay somewhere out there that keeps getting stuck - not sure why it wouldn't reset while driving the truck. And I'm not sure which relay is the problem. My guess is it has something to do with a bad-ish relay and the temperature, since the two times this has happened, it seems to be start on cold days when they're warming up in the Denver sun.

Frustrating issue, but at least it's not something I need to take to a shop. God willing I don't need to do this again, but I know how to get more data now...

 

May or may not be related, I work at a used car dealership and ran into this same problem with a 2010 venza. Took 2 days to find it but here is what I found under the center console. I found that if I put a phone charger into the 12v socket it would shut everything off for a couple minutes then go back to being broken. Noticed wiggling the wires it would allow it to pop back on when we found the burnt connector directly underneath the cup holders.

 

Crazy. And there wasn't a popped fuse from the arcing?

My cigarette lighter doesn't seem to be contributing to my issue, best I can tell...

 

No fuses popped at all everything acted normal just same symptoms of being stuck in accessory mode, I verified it with a scan tool through the BCM it showed acc sw: on all the time. Ended up taking the power wire to the 12v socket and grounding it out with the key off of course or it will pop the fuse and it shut everything down. That's when it was found it was in the same harness.

I did this the other day. I was all like WTF? Then I remembered reading about it on TW….had the parking brake set and trans was in neutral.

Update. Haven't had issues in about 6 weeks. Finally got some time when it was nice out to take apart the covers and look at connectors.

There's unfortunately some corrosion on this batch of connectors. (Anyone know their official designations? I can't figure it out from any of the service manuals.)
The one at the bottom was the worst (which also powers the dashboard), so I cleaned the male and female ends with baking soda + IPA, let it dry, plugged it in, and electrical tape wrapped around connector.

Also of concern was underneath my footwell was water, absorbed by the insulation. There's a leak somewhere, and not sure where. The dealership has noted windshield leaks in the past on non-OEM windshields, so I might look to get that replaced. Inspection of the rest of the interior near the firewall (and in the engine side) doesn't indicate where the leak would be coming from as there is dust most everywhere. Unfortunate, but kind of relieved I found a smoking gun.

 

Maybe this will help. I took my 16 trd offroad to wal mart to get seasonal tire swap. They broke a tpms sensor. They couldnt get the new sensor to link up. I am told tnat my truck is complete so i go outside and truck window is down in rainstorm. As soon as I start the truck, I noticed that the tpms light is on. That night, my alarm system spontaneously goes off multiple times with the keys, sitting in the seat I take the Tacoma back to walmart And they replace the sensor again. This time I leave the Walmart and the tpms light is out. After about 20 miles it starts displaying the air pressure. About 40 miles later, the light comes back on and the tire pressure display goes blank when I shut my truck off, the ignition stays on and with the keys out of the vehicle, it says cannot detect key The only remedy is to disconnect the battery so you don't drain your battery. I took the kick panels off both sides and unplugged all the plugs and plugged them back in. I made sure that all of my viper remote plastic connectors were firmly in place. I checked the brake controller. I replaced the drivers door sensor because the computer was saying that it was opening spontaneously I put a new battery in it even though I probably didn't need to. After unplugging and re-plugging in the connectors in the panel area driver side it seems like my vehicle is turning off fully with the first press of the off button. The radio turns off right away and the P for park that light goes off finally. So either it was the plastic plugs or the shift sensor was not detecting that I was fully in park. I'm pretty sure that taking it to Walmart has something to do with it, but maybe somebody can chime in is it possible that them plugging in to the Communication port could cause these kind of glitches or just a rare coincidence? This is the second time in six months at Walmart has changed the tires and resulted in the Tpms gremlins. Just a note that when the accessories would not shut off, you could not use the remote start or the key fob to lock or unlock doors. The truck was off, but in some kind of pseudo accessory mode, and the P would stay illuminated on the shifter and the radio would turn on by itself. No other lights on the dash.

 

I just got my 2016 TRD Sport after totaling my 2014 Off Road. Literally had it less than a week and it started doing this exact thing, seemingly after getting 2 car washes in the same day (new truck, I was excited lol) and extremely humid upstate NY weather. Radio stays on with key out, doors won’t lock with fob or lock button in truck. Did your connector fix resolve the issue long term? Also my truck is a manual trans with a regular key, not a push button. I found some other posts with this issue and guys pulled the mp-x fuse. Which worked but that also disables your door locks and stuff. Temporary fix.

 

I have not had the issue come back since I've cleaned my contacts. A few things to note though:
It's now warmer out where I am since I've done the cleaning, and I was (at the time) really speculating temperature was a major contributor.
It also hasn't rained much, or had bouts of persist precipitation or snowmelt (e.g. it's not snowing for a day, or snow melting on my truck for a few days afterwards. Best we get is an afternoon thunderstorm).
I periodically check the wetness of my driver's floor mat, and it appears fine.

I'm fairly confident I found my issue with this. The root cause I've heard could be the windshield. The Toyota dealer I contacted asked if I had the original windshield - I do not. They have seen problems where people have their windshield installed incorrectly and it provides some path for water intrusion. Maybe check this first, and then start looking at your connectors?

 

Dude this was so helpful. Just checked the connectors in the drivers floor area. Connectors had a pretty good buildup of corrosion. Luckily no pins seemed to be damaged at all. I was able to clean it out really well. Sprayed some wd40 on the connectors after everything was clean and dry and put it all back together. All the radio and door lock problems are gone.

Only bad thing is now my “Service stability control” warning is on. Which tbh I’m not too worried about. I’ll put my scan tool on it at work tomorrow and see what she says.

But for real thank you. I buy Tacoma’s because I don’t want to have to fix my own shit after fixing other peoples shit all day haha. Hopefully this is the end of it
