I have a question for anyone who might have knowledge about used car buying … I was offered a truck at the dealership 2023 Tacoma but the truck was only driven for 900 miles and owned for 17 day has a clean car fax and service record is spotless . Am I wrong to think there is something wrong with this truck . Is there really anyway to hide something bad about the truck…..they want $40,000 w/taxes

Carfax takes a few months to update its records. Long ago I worked at a dealer. Manager would buy lease returns and turn them into CPO's. Customer bought one with a clean carfax only to return a few months later pitching a fit with a new carfax report showing accident history. Customer was SOL and sent on their way.

Not saying the truck you found is damaged in some way, but anything is possible.

Ask the prior owner why they got rid of it.

Could’ve been an issue with financing and the deal fell thru.

Yeah it’s a crew pickup TRD….service records are dated to 12/16.. nothing on except added running boards and inspection…some say .. that people buy them and then decide it to big for them and bring it back and trade into a car ….
I’m just thinking to myself is it to good to be true…a manger from another dealership said he couldn’t beat the deal and said I should take the deal he couldn’t see anything wrong with the truck on the car fax or service record and then add I still have 2 years of warranty to it…

While you’re debating on buying it someone else may beat you to the punch. I see no red flags.

Yeah sometimes I see dealers will offer a 30 day return policy’ to close the deal… I’ll ask if the sales person is willing let it go for a 48 hour period…. Some stations you need an appointment

I'll tell you what happened. This young man saw all the groupies hanging out with the Toyota bros so he went down and bought one. He went back to hang out and the chicks just ignored him. Frustrated, he returned his TRD OR back to the dealer totally oblivious that chicks only dig the trucks with a skewp.

Dealers are buying the longer sitting units and letting the employees (usually mangers) short leasing them to enjoy for a few weeks/months and sell them as used. Technically still brand new but that opinion is solely yours.

No they’re not. A demo vehicle can be sold as a new with under 5k. It makes zero sense for an employee to buy a vehicle and drive if for a few weeks. Who takes the hit on value? They just throw a dealer plate on it and drive it for a few weeks and still sell it as new.

I would pass, it’s a lot of money and not worth the stress of worrying the possible reasons for its return

Probably not worth the risk, unless you can get a clear and reasonable explanation of why the original owner no longer owns it. Also, as stated above, you really would want to have a knowledgeable third party give it a good look-over to make sure it had not been in an accident.

Ford dealers were doing this with new Bronco's to avoid the financial penalty from Ford Corporate. Basically, if a new Ford Bronco was sold over msrp the dealer would get fined. Dealers bought, titled and then re-sold these vehicles as used with huge markups. There's also cases of dealers purposefully ordering vehicles with the wrong customer selected options, so the customer would get upset and refuse to buy the car. Then it would be bought and re-sold as used at a higher price to another customer.

Who exactly is “short leasing” for a few weeks? Nobody. There’s zero benefit to it, because you’ve now taken a new unit and made it a used car, then paid service to do a UCI on it, then paid to certify it. That makes about as much sense as wiping before you poop.
Edit: at least a Tacoma. I can see some workarounds like for scummy dealers selling new cars as used for huge markups.
