They probably know these games are fixed and it would be the only chance to win. But that didn’t even work.

 

Looks like they didn’t report as eligible on that play. Sucks, but dumb mistakes happen

 

Yea kick it and send it to OT and they would have beat us. But a 35% rate of going for it on 4th is always gonna bite you in the butt at some point

 

Just to clarify this, I really looked it over. Detroit absolutely had an illegal formation because their right tackle also reported eligible. He is covered by the wide receiver on his outside. That is an illegal formation so even if both of them reported as eligible, it was an illegal formation. Seven on the line of scrimmage four in the backfield.
If we say the left end who reported eligible, but was ruled ineligible because he didn't report according to the refs, is on the line of scrimmage man to his left must be off the line of scrimmage. That means the right end who also reported eligible is either covered by an eligible receiver to his right or Detroit has five men in the backfield. In either case, that is an illegal formation.

 

Well, the Lions showed up again. Played well, but ya gotta catch the ball when it really really counts.

 

What's interesting is the flag as thrown may have technically been incorrect, but the play as run was not legal. The actual flag thrown should've been illegal, formation, eligible receiver covered.

What evidence do we have that the right tackle actually reported as eligible? 58/68/70 all walked up to the official before the play, presumably to cause confusion for the defense. I’ve heard postgame remarks from the Lions that 68 reported as eligible, 70 did not, no mention of 58. All of the postgame interviews and reporting on the play were focused on the Lions only intending to report one lineman eligible.

 

68 reported eligible and 70 did not. Somehow the refs confused 68 and 70 (to give them any credit). There were many missed opportunities throughout the game though, including going for 2 twice after that blown call. Not the first time Detroit has been screwed by the refs in Dallas. It was the birthplace of "Detroit vs Everybody."

 

It will make us tougher and meaner going forward.

 

Why does somebody have to report as allowed to catch a ball in a game that primarily involves catching a ball

It was 59 years ago this week the Browns won the NFL title game and 66 years ago this week for the Lions. If you think there is any chance one of those streaks ends this year, which one?

 

ESPN had a few clips calling out the officiating. They brought up a good theory though while also calling out the officiating.

Detroit had been setting up this play all game on the chance they needed to use it by bringing in #70 and reporting him as eligible all game.

The time comes for the play and they bring over Sewell (58), Decker (68), and Skipper (70) and try to discretely report to the officials that Decker is eligible. The official is barely paying attention, knowing 3 linemen are coming up to him and he has to report the eligible receiver to the defense. They'd been trotting out #70 all game and so the official assumed #70 was reporting this time as well.

They also mentioned how it is not #68's job to be over-the-top getting the official to acknowledge because that would give the defense more time to react. They also mentioned a few majorly botched calls this season and all revolving around this same officiating crew.

 

Go ahead and set the timer to 1995 and rescue the 49ers fans while you’re at it.
