I’d pick the Browns based on “defense wins championships” and coming from arguably the best division in the NFL this year (and having beaten the current top seeds in both conferences).

 

Basically rules on how many linemen and formations, etc. My understanding is that whenever they bring in extra linemen, one has to report as eligible and functions as a TE even though they may only be in to block.

 

I genuinely don’t understand the whole deception angle in trying to disguise who is reporting, since the ref tells the defensive captain anyway. It certainly backfired with the apparent ref confusion on who was reporting.

 

That was my question. The defense is told anyway by the ref, so why not just run out waving your hands yelling “I’M ELIGIBLE!”. It would be a moot point if Goff threw a good ball on the last 2pt try. Hit him in stride and he’s in.

At face value, yes. However it buys the offense a few seconds that the defense doesn't have to prepare. Given that it is also a regular practice, the idea is that the defense is hopefully paying less attention and doesn't focus enough on who actually reported, especially when a different lineman has been reporting all game. Basically it's all down to minute advantages.

Also, agreed about Goff. No one is arguing that. There were other chances throughout the game that would have avoided this scenario, but they didn't. Example: Prescott should have been sacked for a safety but instead it turned into a 93 yard TD on a broken defensive play.

 

And I should have been born rich instead of handsome. Everything is rigged. Get used to it.

Officiating crew will be downgraded.

 

They also had a bad call in a Saints/Falcons game, which looks more irrelevant now. But the article I read said this crew will likely not see postseason work.

 

Sounds like the attempt at misdirection was successful at the wrong level. Placing the ref in a position to correctly identify which of 3 players is supposed to be eligible introduces this possible outcome. 3 helmeted, masked men with crowd noise and visual distractions, what could go wrong? If the Lions heard the wrong player being identified they certainly didn’t do anything to correct that.

 

I don’t think they’d hear who was identified. The ref goes and tells the defensive captain. I believe it’s announced over the PA in college but not in the NFL.

 

Correct. The attempt at deception was successful in deceiving the officials, apparently. But the official walks over to the defense. Not sure anything was announced over the PA so they would have not had any way to know the official got the call wrong, nor is it on Decker to know the official got it wrong when he did his job. They're wearing facemasks, yes, but not ski masks. Decker was also the closest one to the official so there was no reason to assume the official did not get the right player. It sounds merely like the official was barely paying attention and assumed based solely on previous plays.

 

FWIW the same officiating crew blew a call that caused a tripping penalty on Dallas. Terrible zebras.

 

Just saying an attempt to be deceitful can backfire. According to you they had one and only one chance to report the correct player. It couldn’t happen that way if only the one player went to report. It’s Detroit’s responsibility to report AND BE RECOGNIZED for this very reason so messing with that process can have consequences. The refs have a difficult job as it is, making it harder doesn’t seem like a good idea. Detroit played shell game and lost.

 

Niners opened up the lead. If they choke to the Commanders, then I'll start worrying.

 

But again, when you do exactly what you are SUPPOSED TO DO, it is not your job to go beyond that, especially if you're trying to disguise things. Not to mention that 70 DID NOT report as the officials said that he did (he was farthest away of the 3 linemen) and the official looks at 68 when he reported. Not to mention Dan Campbell went over the exact play with the officials before the game as they do with any potential trick play.

 

Quite a few blown calls and non-calls, I'll give you that.
