For future reference you should lay a folded up bath or beach towel on your windshield. There is a spring in the wiper arm and if you accidentally bump it or it slips out of your hand it will snap down and break the windshield.

We have a suspected squatter living in @Gwyns04's and @Stitchgirl90 's neighborhood. She is a black lady of an unknown age (probably in her 30s or 40s if I had to guess) with no hair, and she clearly doesn't have a car (and likely no driver's license) because we always see her walking. During the summer, she actually walked up to Gwyn and asked for money. She had clearly wet herself, and we found out by accident that she is terrified of dogs when Gwyn let hers out to play. Gwyn called the cops, but there was apparently nothing they could do. That was back in August or September if I remember correctly. Gwyn heard somewhere that this woman is living in a rented house by herself, and it's paid for by an agency or sponsor of some sort.

Gwyn and my girlfriend do not live in a wealthy neighborhood, but it isn't a poor or rundown neighborhood by any stretch of the imagination. The houses were all built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, many have been heavily renovated and added onto, and one just went for $430K. Another house in the neighborhood, the same floorplan as the one my girlfriend's landlady owns, just went on the market for $525K. What I'm trying to say here is that some houses in the neighborhood are rented out by their owners, but this is not the type of neighborhood where someone who is likely on welfare would get an entire 3-bedroom to themselves paid for by the government. Keep reading...

I am going to need to know more before commenting.
I know(n) people that live in small campers with a hole in the side and a small wood burning stove inside to keep warm.
One guy gets his water from a water hose at an old well. and has his camper waste water run into the old home place septic system.
The other (passed away) would haul water from his sister home to his camper. The situation is hard to explain.

My point is, I don't mind "less than wealthy" folks living by/close to me.
I've said it many times, I don't care about much as long as you leave me alone.

I see this woman almost daily when I drive into Amanda's neighborhood, just walking, and almost always with a bag of groceries...

Early this afternoon, I went to pick up Amanda and bring her back to my house, and she was walking with a bag of groceries. Today was one of those rare mornings where I actually had the windows up due it being so chilly. She stopped, looked at me, and actually walked into the middle of the opposing lane with her hand raised in an attempt to get me to stop; I just ignored her and kept driving because I knew she either wanted money or a ride.

Amanda's landlady has COVID, so I'm not going into the house right now; I was waiting outside in the truck when I saw one of the neighbors walking her dog. I told her that my girlfriend lived in the house I was sitting in the driveway of, and also told her that I was friends with Gwyn (I told her Gwyn's address and it turns out she knows Gwyn). I told her about the lady and she said that she'd never had an encounter with her but thanked me for telling her.

The guy who lives directly across the street happened to be outside, overheard us, and said he'd called the cops on her when she came into his yard asking for money; I talked to a young mother and her kids down the street after picking up Amanda and she also told us she'd had encounters with this woman. This woman had a Mastiff, a puppy, but still a huge dog; I told her that the panhandler woman was afraid of dogs and she thanked me for the info... ;)

I talked to yet another neighbor, a middle-aged man with kids, on the way out of the neighborhood. He told me that the woman had asked his daughter for money, and that he suspected she was squatting in a recently foreclosed house in the neighborhood. This makes a lot more sense because again, I don't people who qualify for section 8 or other government-funded housing will go up to their neighbors asking for money. Gwyn still believes the information that this woman is living by herself, legally, in a rented house, but I'm not so sure and tend to agree with the neighbors. My theory is that she came from Philly, panhandled money from people down there, and paid to ride the bus up from the city. Gwyn gave me what she believes to be the house is renting, and I decided to check the place out before taking Amanda home. The house is on the street directly behind Amanda's; it had nice cars in the driveway, was in a great shape, and didn't look like the type of place where someone receiving assistance would be living. However, there was a house across the street from the address Gwyn gave us that had no lights on and looked neglected (long grass, disheveled landscaping, and no vehicles in the dirveway). This is likely the recent foreclosure that the other neighbor told us about, and I would not be shocked if this woman broke in and is sleeping there. What amazes me is that (A) nobody in the neighborhood, (B) the bank/lienholder, or (C) the local cops HAVE NOT INVESTIGATED THIS FURTHER!

"Less than wealthy" is much different than "breaking into a vacant/bank-owned house and living there illegally." Also, I'm not the type to pry into the business of others, but she is starting to get on my nerves. If she approaches my truck, I'm just going to tell it like it is, that I don't have any money and I don't let strangers in my truck; I once rushed a female friend home on election day in 2022 because she having her period and had forgotten to bring extra pads, risking menstrual blood on my seat covers, but I am not about to let a stranger who wets herself in my truck!

Just for the record, I was a stuck in traffic on 611 years ago and made the mistake of making eye contact with a guy who also seemed to be homeless. He was clearly hitchhiking, and actually started walking toward my truck. It was a nice day; I had the windows down and the stereo cranked. Thankfully, traffic started moving and I floored it...

Homeless people gonna do homeless people things; I just don't get what about a 14-year old Toyota pickup screams "hit me up for money" or "I give strangers rides". If she is in fact supposed to be in the neighborhood and is living in a rented house, that's fine. If she starts harassing my girlfriend, we're gonna have a problem; I don't give a shit about her race or socioeconomic status. If she is in fact squatting at a foreclosed house in fairly pricey neighborhood, I find it amusing that nobody's figured it out yet.

Be interesting to know how long she's been around all in all. Or she could be living in the woods in a tent or something even..

    @Just_A_Guy

For the record, my only concerns are for the safety of Gwyn, my girlfriend, and my girlfriend's landlady. Luckily, there are two dogs and three guys residing in the house with my girlfriend and her landlady. I also really don't like confrontation and I really do not want to get physical with a female; I would have no problem defending myself or those I care about from a man, but I have a thing about hitting women. So far, this woman seems to be harmless, but I don't know shit about her. She could be totally nuts and capable of violence. Luckily, there is a cop living on the street.

Yeah, I don't think she should be trying to stop traffic.
But otherwise, I could care less where she lives or who is paying for it.
I'd also have no problems making it clear, I will NOT loan or give out any money.
You can be polite and firm in telling a person "No".

    --Story time. --
I had a guy at a gas station as me if I had a few dollars to spare.
    I said, "No"
He asked, "Can I ask you a question?"
    I said, "Sure"
He said, "Do you really not have any money, or is it you don't want to give it to me?"
Talk about awkward.....But I stuck to my word. I told him the truth.
I said, "It's because I don't want to give it to you"
He smiled and said, "Thanks for being honest. Sorry to bother you"
I think about that man every time someone ask me for money.

Sometimes I give them money. Some times I don't.
And one time, I was told the rapture was coming. And god was going to hold me accountable for my actions. (Because I said, "No. I don't have any money I want to give you")
Now that was REALY awkward. But I don't hold it against the woman. I think she had some mental issues.

You can probably agree with this one, @ABA180; I see people on the road who have clearly been drinking all the time when I drive at night. As long as they aren't swerving into the oncoming lane, and as long as they don't hit my truck, I won't get involved.

If drug addicts want to shoot heroin and smoke crack, let them. That's their business. If they steal from me or put my life in danger while in a drug-fueled rage, then it becomes my problem.

When someone is walking around a neighborhood where both my girlfriend and another close female friend of mine live, and when my friend's neighbors have complained, then it definitely becomes my business.

One time when I was still working at Puck, I went to the state store to pick up some liquor. It is right around the corner, like less than a mile, but it's obviously easier to put several thousand dollars worth of booze in the back of the truck than carry it back to the bar. I was sitting at a red light with the windows down, cranking Billy Joel, when this guy ran up to me and asked if I have any money for the bus. I kinda looked at him like he was crazy, told him no, and hit the gas when the light turned green. Again, I don't know why an old Toyota Tacoma is so inviting to these people...

    That's understandable.
I've had to refuse rides to town.
And I have to be honest, The person asking didn't seem to bath, and was always filthy.
The odor was just awful. I know it sounds bad on my part.
But I'm being honest. I can't take that.

The guy is nice and would help anybody.
But he just lives that way. There a lot to his story too. But it isn't my place to tell it.
    I now just avoid him.
