    Hey all... been a while.
Anyway, shitty update, but it happened.
Check engine light came on at start up few days ago... didnt notice anything majorly wrong during driving.
Took it into O'Reilly, ran the diag and P11EC code came back.
Did my research here and took it in the next day.
Based on a quick call from the dealership, #3 cyl was burnt and leaking so they're going to do some major work... dont have all the details yet.
Anyway, shes gonna be in the shop for a week.

The kicker... I was 20 days away from warranty expiring and just crossed 50k miles.

    You could say that...
Kinda makes me wonder, its as if they know these things happen in 5 years around 50 miles...little suspect to me. :)

Just kidding, I don't wonder. They know.

unless they are still in the process of tearing it down for further info,, I would want more details as to what "major work" they are doing and what the final bill looks like. I don't like blank checks.

He stated all work being done is going to be covered under the warranty.... so they can tear down whatever they want and fix away!

Unless you think they could find something NOT covered under warranty and just start billing for it?

Considering the code he got I'm sure they're probably replacing the cylinder head and either the bad exhaust valves or all the exhaust valves. It's warranty so doubtful it's a blank check scenario.

DCLB, so 6. I have yet to see a 4 cyl P11XX code. I'm not sure that even exists in the computer on them.

I was hoping I would get at least 100k miles before something like this happened...
Would anyone know how long this work would be warrantied for? If this happens again, am I shit out of luck, do I get another 2-3 years added on for this work?

Seems like luck of the draw.

Some trucks are completely stock and some are modded.

Also, I don’t remember seeing a lot of early year 3rd gens with this issue. Maybe I’m wrong though.

Just watching the forum, I haven't seen any 2016s with the issue from what I remember. I have seen almost all of them be 2017-2019. I have seen 1 2020 and 2 2021s. Browsing Facebook groups and searching, all I ever saw were 2017-2019. Some from FB could be duplicates. I really don't get on the FB groups much anymore.

P11EC seems to happen most often at low mileage, and is by far the most common one I see here. High mileage ones seem to usually be P11ED. I have seen maybe 2 P11EE watching from here.

My guess is manufacturing flaw as well. Trucks could be modded and tuned, or stock and stock tune. Doesn't really seem to matter. Seems like if it's going to happen, it's going to happen. Just hope it happens within warranty time.

The thing that makes me skeptical is that it keeps happening to the same 3 cylinders and none of the other 3. Why? Pretty sure the valve and valve seat parts are the same for all cylinders. Is there something in the engine management or design that causes these 3 cylinders to face more heat or something that causes problems in these specific cylinders? It's just a very odd issue. If it is a true manufacturing issue, I would imagine it would happen equally to all 6 cylinders. There probably are some extenuating circumstances that affect how the failure happens.

I’ve seen like 30 or so on here. So let’s say there are a million 3rd gens Tacomas, that’s only 0.003% failure rate.

Unless my math is wrong. I never liked math ha.:)

Just quickly glanced over that sticky “engine failure” thread. Saw 2016s and all the way to 2022s.

I am sure there are probably plenty that don't end up on TacomaWorld. Although, the techs who do speak about the issue here don't seem to see them very often themselves, so it probably is quite rare. But it is a huge bummer of a problem if it happens so it sucks to think it could happen regardless.

I think there were around 1.5 million third gens but a decent number of them are 4 cylinders, so honestly who knows what the failure rate truly is.

2016s with the P11 valve issue? I've seen failed 2016s, but not for that issue.

edit: I did find one random thread with a 2016 P11EE.
