coming from a 2020 4Runner to a 2023 Tacoma……….. I got band from the Facebook taco nation for talking about my experiences with experimenting with higher octane fuel because my engine was a Rattle bag of crap and it gear hunted.

I just drove 148 miles city and 55mph roads.
I used 5.7 gallons to do it. It was on Half 87/93 octane/im at sea level. Do the math as I’m not allowed to put the calculation here. 2023 SR5 V6 3.5L stock wheels with the Firestone at 31psi. This was impressive
To say the least. Only mod on engine is K&N filter in the stock box.

Calculation is 26mph. Driving home from fill up dash said 29.4. Highest ever!!! Impressed

Bring it. I’ve raced and built Engines since a young lad. I know when an engine is working with less hesitation. And Dude I’m not impressed. I’m here to report my findings and help others. And your comment….. best you got??? SMH

I just got 40.8 mpg in my bloated Tacoma house.

Must have been that sweet sweet Baja Mexico ethanol free gas that cost ~$5.00/gallon.

That is impressive. It's probably your drop in K&N.

K&N drop in filter will do nothing but add noise and let dust in. These 3.5s use same air box as 5.7L tundra, they get plenty of air.

I was a believer of oiled filters for years, once I saw a layer of dust in my intake tube, that POS filter went straight into the garbage.

I will agree on higher octane fuel though. These trucks seem to run better on it. I’ve always used at least 91E0

Yes, good mileage (for a brick) is possible with the Tacoma, good job ! Anyone can fill up, coast down a long hill or take a snap shot in time of great mileage. There are at least two ways to verify m.p.g. history #1 to take of picture of distance to empty at fill up with the trip meter showing zero miles since, todays vehicles have the ability to record previous and predict/estimate future mileage. For instance my distance to empty at fill up ranges from ~420 to 440 miles. Another way to verify is from the history screen showing many tanks which would be hard to fake.

You drove home at 26 mph?

I'm surprised you didn't get band from the highway

I have to say "Engine Masters" is a great series that uses a dyno to prove/debunk results. They did one on octane as well as many others series. Quite interesting.

I love the threads where 20mpg truck owners claim they get near 30 and the others piling in complaining/bragging about their modified trucks getting 1/2 that

And that was what this was about!!! I just had to mention if I did any mods to be fair.
I will only use top tier and higher than 87. At low rpms on 87 at sea level my engine fights
And feels like it’s knocking but not on 91.

I do pretty damn well on the mpg’s, but my truck is a 2WD Access Cab. I’m not tuned and I’m still running stock 245/65/16 tires, but I suspect that it’s mostly cause I drive like a grandpa unless I’m in a hurry.

Sorry bubba, I have to say, your introduction to this community is pretty funny, and not going to help you build any creds. I stand by what I wrote earlier, not impressive.

so you're mixing 87 and 93...imagine how many mpgs you would get if you just ran 93

The real question is what kind of oil are you using. And what does it taste like.

I’m 60 and raced and built motors in my life. Looks like most here are either low IQ or negative Nancy bots. I have no time for this.
I’m trying to be helpful. This is the 3.5L that’s in the Lexus that runs on 91 minimum. This is an 11.8:1 compression engine. I’m at sea level where octane counts in an engine. I’m in belief that running 87 at sea level the engine starts to knock and the timing gets retarded and the engine makes less power and starts to bog then you press into the pedal and the shift starts to surf. On 91, this all stops. That’s my findings. If you are at high elevation and using 87, that’s like 89/91 at sea level.
Have a great day and try to learn instead of just putting big wheels and tires on a rear end gear set that’s already got you at a disadvantage. SMH
    Here’s something:
    1 experiment
    2 make observations
    3 take notes
    4 gain knowledge
    Happy Friday SMH

The big contributer to your mpgs are those tires. I used to get 24mpg consistently on long drives at high speeds and hills with those Firestones and 87 octane

But are you changing the fuel filter between running 87 and 91?
