Good luck getting the approvals for permits and EIRs (Environmental Impact Reports) in California.

I found this interesting. It was partially sponsored by Ford. Wonder what that means when a competitor pays for what amounts to a giant add for the competition.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-12-27/elon-musk-s-tesla-is-losing-ev-race-to-china-s-byd

China’s BYD Co. bills itself as the biggest car brand you’ve never heard of. It might need a different tagline soon.

The automaker is poised to surpass Tesla Inc. as the new worldwide leader in fully electric vehicle sales. When it does — likely in the current quarter — it will be both a symbolic turning point for the EV market and further confirmation of China’s growing clout in the global automotive industry.

History repeats itself, in the late 70's early 80's Japan kicked the legacy automakers ass. China is going to do it again and for the same reasons.

Okay so, here's a wrench to throw at the machinery. They are building investors fast, it could happen.

I’m an EV fan. I’ve owned a Chevy Volt for 7 years, 100k miles. That said……
    • 700 watts solar charging is a bit under 6 amps at 120v. So under ideal conditions and for a couple hours per day you can recoup a few miles of charge. For reference my Volt at 8 amps gets 3 miles/hour. Vehicle weight & efficiency will impact that but I’m having a hard time accepting their claim of 40 miles per day from solar.
    • 1,000 mile range on a full charge? This vehicle looks about the size of a Polaris Slingshot. Even with solid state batteries (vaporware as of yet) I’m having a hard time seeing where they can fit all those amp hours.
    • 3 wheels means motorcycle. Refer back to the Slingshot comparison, that’s a very niche market & the legal requirements may vary from state to state as far as license & helmet requirements.

If you read their pitch, on a full charge the solar is meant to keep it charged. If it's not cloudy. And you don't have a headwind. Over flat ground. And it's a single passenger. It's a fail in my book either way, just thought it was an interesting development.

I did Read through quite a bit of their very awkwardly designed site.

700 watts to propel that thing down even a flat road is very optimistic, even giving them credit for technology that doesn’t yet exist. It takes 10,000+ watts to hold 60mph for current EVs. 700 watts may be just barely enough for the ECU, BCM & running lights.

Pretentious, but at least the last 15 seconds showed it. Not gonna lie, I really like the way it looks, especially the fact that it looks like it has a solid rear axle. Maybe a solid front, too, but it's hard to tell if what I'm seeing is actually a panhard bar or not.

Bad news (maybe) on the solid axle design. The shots from the video were of the ICE Scout from the 1970's. There is, however, a chance it will have a solid rear axle.

There's a bigger chance that this is the same sort of BULLSHIT that Toyota does. Endless FUD press releases to keep the uncertain on the sidelines.

Oh, FFS. I was sitting there like "wow, they did a hell of a job on the styling."

I love competition. Tesla sells upper end cars while BYD is more toward the bottom. Maybe Tesla will design and sell a more affordable car and BYD will start selling in the US. Bring it on! Oh, as far a legacy auto is concerned - sucks to be them lol

This helps the entire EV market lower prices.
