What will happen if I increase the voltage from 16v to 24v on my cheap battery spot welder?

I have this very cheap spot welder for securing nickel strips to lithium batteries. As a source I've been using a 16v li-po battery. It's probably pulling around 150anps. Assuming the board can handle the added voltage what should I expect from the change? How would the welds change?

 

I've never owned, much less used a spot welder.

But if any of the principles of spot welding apply to say, the common processes (at the hobbyist level at least), you'd blow through whatever metal you're spot welding.

I assume your spot welder, at only 16v, has a limited capacity in terms of thickness? At 24v, you may be going way too high for its intended use and might burn through the metal you're working with or worse.

 

Now I want to know!

 

So are you saying it could end up having better penetration?

 

Yes but no cause in welding, adding wirespeed brings more heat than adjusting the voltage does.

My assumption is you'll get some fucked up results.

Why not just TIG weld it since you mentioned nickel?

 

It has a 25v capacitor. I'm really tempted to solder in a new one and get crazy.

 

I have a tig welder but it would be really difficult to get the positive side since it's smaller in diameter than the nickel strips.

I haven't done any more practicing since last week.

However, I did successfully complete AGI's Welding Course. Lots of information - now I need to practice more.

 

I built this bumper for a coworker. I think it came out pretty good, except for the paint. Not a fan of it.

 

Nope. My brother ordered a few shipping containers for his property, came by asking for a hand. Apparently he wants to make like a tiny home thing out of it, but for the purposes of storage. So we’ll be cutting out window and doing a rolling garage door that will get welded up. The plans he sent to the town had a 10 ft’er on top for a second story type thing. Not sure if he want’s outside stringers framed up, or weld up a ramp for like dolly’s.

World events have had me busy otherwise. Good time to throw in the towel, and hopefully never see an airport or step foot on some of these garbage continents ever again.

New to welding? I'm pretty green so I'm still enjoying every minute of it.

 

That looks good! Yeah personally I hate any type of paint work, I just don't have patience for it.

 

I've had my welder for about 7 years, and received informal instruction from several friends. My earlier welding projects (on both truck and teardrop) are holding up - so no complaints there.

I wanted to know more - I felt like I only knew the basics. In the back of my mind, I always wondered if what I was doing was right. I thought about going to a local college, but the schedule never worked out. I bit the bullet and bought the DVD set - turns out, it was a good move. I'm a little surprised as to how much I learned from the video format. (Of course, given last week's conversation, I know there is a whole lot more to learn.)

So, maybe not "new", but definitely a novice. It's really fun, though - the idea of gluing 2 pieces of metal together in any shape you want.

I have about a dozen projects in mind to do - there's no stopping me now!

The first pierce, I have been breaking everything down in small pieces and testing as I go. Sometimes things may seem out of order But, Now I can say the computer can control the table and the Plasma Cutter.

Why ya using plastic torch mounts though? Everything else you've got going is beefy as hell.
