To be fair, one of the issues with the 4-team format was that it punished any loss during the season, but especially at the end of the season.

The Rose Bowl should always be between the the Big 10 and PAC 12 champions. But the BCS and greed have fucked that idea straight into never again land.

Yes/no. Alabama was rewarded in 2017 for losing to Auburn, and made the playoff.

so really it’s only everyone else that gets punished for a loss no matter the time of the loss. Alabama gets freebies.

I can’t recall Ohio State getting an equivalent level or as many freebies as Alabama.

That's how it used to be. Too many major bowl games were decided by contracts so the people deciding them often didn't have great matchups to put in them. Plus there won't be a Pac 12 after this season...well, not really anyway. The Rose Bowl used to be one of the most prestigious bowl games until a few years ago when it basically became a consolation prize for the B1G runner-ups. Only since adding it to the playoff has it regained real importance.

Agreed there that Alabama gets the benefit of the doubt. Paul Finebaum even touched on this after the loss to Michigan. But nevertheless, Alabama had a chance to make up for their loss to Texas and beat Georgia who was the #1 team at the time (and some think would beat Alabama in a rematch). Ohio State lost to the #3 team in the last game of the season and had no chance to make up for it. At least with expansion, your body of work will matter more and we won't likely be seeing any 1-loss teams be left out, let alone undefeated teams. And hopefully a lot less opt-outs.

As many? No. No team really gets that unless you want to count how overrated ND is every season. But OSU got one hell of a freebie last season by getting in to the playoffs while other teams were left out by virtue of losing in an extra game that Ohio State didn't have to play. They nearly capitalized too.

Nick Saban brought up something on the Pat McAfee show that I didn't think about and no one seems to be talking about. Michigan was the first team Alabama played all season that huddled before each play. He talked about that being a disadvantage for Alabama in the sense of having less time to react to formations.

That's probably the first time I've heard of huddling being that usually no-huddle is associated with hurry-up offense.

Maybe this is more memorable to me than it is to you since my son graduated from TCU in 2016. The Committee's" excuse was the "Total Body of Work" of Ohio State. Sounds like some kinda made-up bullshit, and it was...

See now I didn’t disagree with that. Because the NUMBER ONE criteria according to the committee is Conference Championship. Big12 didn’t have one at the time, not TCUs fault, it’s the conferences fault. But I fully agreed with OSU getting in after winning their conference.

I won’t even begin to list the freebies Bama has received because I simply don’t have the time. Let’s just say about 7 fake national titles and you can go from there haha

Penn state beat Ohio state and won the B1G but OSU got in to the CFP. 20…16?

Aside from the Alabama thing, on which I agree with you, TCU had been ranked 3, and Ohio State ranked 5. I guess the "Committee" didn't realize until the very last instant that the Big 12 didn't have a playoff. Once they realized that, they said "Oh, all Big 12 teams are disqualified from the CFP. So let's elevate 6 ranked Ohio State to number 4 so they can fill the vacancy". I understand now. But it would have made much more sense for the Committee to exclude TCU from the start of the CFP countdown, instead of waiting (and hoping) that they would lose a game and provide them a more believable excuse.

I don’t have crazy football memories like some people…

but the article he linked has Ohio state beating Wisconsin in the big ten championship game.

ah that was 2014, confused because he said his son graduated 2016 so I thought he meant that year.

I think it was 2017? Bama got in after losing to Auburn their final game and not playing in the sec championship.

then of course this year getting in over FSU

and the 2011 title they got in over Oklahoma State for a rematch even though LSU had already beaten Alabama that year.

Sorry for the confusion. My son was there 2011 thru 2016. Five years for an Electrical Engineering degree. Woulda been cheaper if he had done it in four . . . :spending:

    https://theathletic.com/5175508/202...ll-recruiting-all-americans-nil-rule-changes/

For the second year in a row we caught up with some of the best high school football players in the country at the Under Armour All-America Game’s media day event to tackle a variety of recruiting topics.

We granted them anonymity to gather their insights on NIL, the coaches they liked (and didn’t like) and what rules they would like to see changed.
