I take a deep breath and hold it when I do the monthly(ish) exercise of the 4L shift. The 2H to 4H shift is always flawless: either on a wet road when I will test it, or in the driveway when it's stationary and I have to travel through 4H first to get to 4L.

The 4L shift is always clunky noises and drama; especially the initial shift when I do it more than once. It makes me nervous: like if you ignore it for a year it's going to be in a major snit and make you pay with blinking lights and beeps and no engagement: i.e.: "use it or lose it"
    :spending:

Idk my 4wd system works flawlessly aside from the occasional grumbling (beeping) when I'm going just a bit too fast for L4 but I use mine pretty often since I have a 2 low module installed.
It was a bit clunky when the truck was new but it's smooth now aside from the occasional clunk when going in and out of low but that's normal.
I did have my rear locker get stuck on me once because I neglected to engage it occasionally but a couple light taps on it with a hammer got it going again.

 Your calm replies always help bring me back from the brink here: Thank you. But to be honest, I've never had the guts to try a shift to 4L under power while moving: even at +- 1 mph. That's what the spirit of the truck is waiting for me to do and down comes the hammer. I'll never do it. That bone-headed shut-off-the key-during-a-shift-transition I did scared me for life and armed the secret self-destruct mode in the thing. Nuh-Ugh. :smack:

For the most part ESOF 4wd systems have been pretty reliable, most issues come from not being used or in Toyota's case water getting in the actuators from a disconnected vent hose.
When everything is working like it's supposed to they pretty much won't allow you to make a shift at a speed that could damage things, you have to be in neutral or foot on the clutch and barely rolling to get in and out of 4L on every vehicle I've seen with electronic 4wd.

    You're the man.

I believe you. But this is my last truck and I don't want to break it: it's too young and the kids will put me in a "home" if I do. (in a van down by the river)

Today, wet and rainy here in San Diego, I decided to run the truck in H4 for a bit... as I have done dozens or hundreds of times before.
Shift on the fly for H2 to H4 >>>
Instead of H4 engaging, the rapid blinking L4 begins (as with the original issue I mentioned in this post).

    >>The truck stayed in H2, as well.
    >>The L4 flashing would not stop when I rotated the selector back to H2, while driving.
As soon as I came to a stop, turned off the motor, and restarted the 4x4 light stayed off.

I am guessing it is related to my original issue of going into L4??

The last time I tested my 4WD system, about a week ago, all functions worked: H4, L4, and RR Locker. BUT, the L4 light began blinking when I returned to H4 and I had to restart the truck to turn the indicator light off.

Probably the same issue it's just gotten worse, have you done any checking at all?

I'd look at the vent hose on the Transfer Case Actuator first, I suspect it may be broken and allowing dirt and water in.

    We suggested that in posts 4, 6, 10, 13, 15, and now 28.
    Never an answer.

I'm mean, we're here to help.
But we need data. If OP needs help to obtain the data, we can do that.

Soon enough, it’ll be dry again in Sand Dog, and the water in the actuator shorting the contacts will dry, and it’ll work again. We’ll see OP on the next ground hog day lol

LOL... while I am not as active here as I used to be, I still check in almost daily. My 2010 Tacoma is under a carport and not driven so much, since I retired five years ago. No Baja trips either, since 2018.
I will check the breather tube (I presume that's what was meant by vent hose).
As mentioned, the last time I tried all the settings, they worked. Except that when going from 4WD to 2WD caused the blinking.
Yesterday, instead of going into 4WD, the blinking began (just the opposite). That was a different thing and why I posted.
I will take it to Jason (Speed Freek) at some point before I try to go four wheeling again... The desert is calling to me, LOL!
    Happy New Years Taco People!

Today, truck went into (and out of) all traction levels without issue: H4, L4, Rear Locker.
I guess she was 'in the mood' today?
