    I use the standard RAM type 1"(25mm) ball mount.
    I don't think I would recommend any longer than 6". This would also depend what you are attaching on the end. If it was an iPad or a tablet then not more than 4".

    Just received and installed my BDRM. Instructions provided are clear and overly detailed for those who are afraid of drilling into their dash. The mount fits great, looks OEM+, and is definitely well designed. Oostrama is a good dude to work with and buy from. I haven't received my phone mount yet (didn't buy from OP), or else I'd post pictures with it all mounted up.
