My first thought was a table saw (I have one) but didn't want to run the lines all the way to the edge. I also thought about wrapping a frame around it so I could do that, but my hope was a solid piece of a nice figured wood where the grain pattern was unbroken across the entire top surface.

I have a router as well and like the idea of making a jig. I would definitely practice on scrap first. That stuff @wilcam47 linked is interesting. Might look into that as well.

    Thanks for all the ideas!

You could run the cuts to the edge with a table saw then glue up a darker edge around the perimeter. Would look pretty badass I think

essentially framing in the whole center once you’re done making the grid cuts

Well I started drilling out the holes for the mortices. Started with a small forster for the corners and then I'll use a larger bit for the bulk of the waste.
    20240102_170735.jpg
I was making good progress, had the drill press set at its slowestbspeed so I didn't burn the bit up. Then I heard thwap thwap thwap thwap and rubber started coming out the back of the drill press right before it locked up at full depth of hole. I smell rubber! That's not good.
Shredded the belt and it got all wrapped up in the reeves drive.
    20240102_172957.jpg
I had to take the drive apart to get the belt out. I covered the top of the spring while I took the snap ring off so it didn't launch everything.
    20240102_175402.jpg
Then I was able to remove the top pully half.

Old delta can be hard to find parts for sometimes but I found the belt on ebay. It's a 2007 drill press, I like it because of the variable speed. I've never really needed anything bigger than it's 12" size. So I'll clean the top half up while I'm waiting for the belts to come. Dead in the water for now.
    Stuff happens.

Do you know the belt size? It might be possible to find one at a parts store if you know the length.

    Old? Damn…
I bought mine at least a decade earlier, oddly enough it doesn’t feel old to me. I guess I got old along with it.

I dont know the length, it was pretty shredded. And its cogged on the inside so not just a simple belt.
    Yup, it's a DP350 type one. 2007 I believe.

Dunno what the advantage is. Heat reduction or grip?

Different machine but we bought new rotortiller 1 season or so use and belt wore out. Bare used it a handfull times...put new belt on and ive used it about the same amount and new belt is holding.

It's not for grip, it's for flexibility so it can make a tight bend.

I would make friends with someone from your region who has a laser, at least as a test to compare the thin-precision of those already-blackened cuts to routed lines: https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/regions.36/

I would view this as a grand experiment. Start with inexpensive materials ... project pine or poplar. If something looks abyssmal just burn it for warmth and try another method.

You have probably heard it, but I will say it ... you learn more from errors than success.

That chainsaw jig... both brilliant and terrifying! Not a chainsaw expert, but what happens if it breaks?
