@ the OP, I have lost count of the mentions of “surfing” engine and trans. Is this a technical engine builder term? I’m not familiar, sry.

How true but a forum member copped the attitude first and I said Fack it. Already know about OTT and have it lined up to happen shortly. From day one I did the research of the gear hunting and the torque converter shutter. I’ll be getting my trans level checked shortly and the OTT re maps the trans shifting tables and VVT etc. you assumed I haven’t done the research, and you would be wrong but I won’t chastise you :p Nonetheless I got attacked just trying to bring my findings to others incase it helps. Yeah I’m 60. I don’t know everything. I’m still learning everyday. Nonetheless, some others do not have an open mind here.

Shell 110 octane race fuel and a few quarts of octane booster should achieve similar results, think of the cost savings MPG to fuel costs....

This is all fun and games until someone points out higher octane fuel actually has fewer units of energy per unit of volume than Regular fuel. :)

the BTU content between 87 and 93 does not differ much, but the higher compression engines are able to extract more of the BTU's because of higher combustion pressure and temperature.

So says someone who still has his head wrapped around carbureted engines. Then there are engines like the Skyactiv in my wife's Mazda3, 13:1 compression ratio and runs on Rebular gasoline.

Then I’ll ask you: how do the get around detonation? That 87 would pop like popcorn way before the negative TDC norm. Are they injecting very rich ? Super lean. Combustion chamber design??? VVT tricks?
Also to note: 3.5L is also in the Lexus. That why I’m thinking they’ve dumbed down the ECU to run 87 in the Tacoma and that’s why the OTT tune works well (from what I’ve read/heard)
Nonetheless, you sound intelligent, I wish you lived close by to go “dang your taco runs like shit on 87 but is a whole different thing on higher octane”. Then you’d scratch your head and with the knowledge you may have, you’d maybe come up with reasoning of why and why is this. That’s why I’m here. To share my current findings.

Oh come on; you're the one who claims to be the race engine savant, you should know the answer to this. Here's a hint though, look up Mazda Skyactiv technology, specifically their piezoelectric injectors; the fact is, these days a well designed high compression ratio engine does not require anything more than 87 AKI fuel. That said, Mazda did need to compromise their Skyactiv design for the North American market; in other parts of the world their engines are 14:1.

I'm at 500ft and have driven 40k miles in my 2021 that I purchased new. In that time I have always ran 87 from Costco and have not had any knocking or pinging. I remember you from taco nation and you got in several arguments over your opinion or experiments. Now you're here to spread your propaganda that's based off opinion with zero facts to back it up.
My owners manual and gas cap both say 87 is fine.

If I put 120 octane in will I get 30 mpg on 35's with stock gears? Or 130 octane for 37's?
Hell maybe straight corn juice at this point
