The Haldex diffs are quirky, my local shop helped me replace it with a new one, also bad. It wasn’t until the third try that I got a good one, apparently notorious for exactly that…
I loved that car for the sleeper factor…300+awd horsepower in a grocery getter!

I was pretty sure this was the bevel/angle gear, but that didn't look like a fun job and a good used one was expensive.

If I got it into a situation where it wanted to power the rear wheels I would hear faint grinding from somewhere up front.

It seemed like a ridiculous system. If I remember right, the rear driveshaft spun all the time and whether it was actually powering anything was up to an electric pump on the rear diff that caused the clutch to grab.

Mine was an 06, though. I think Volvo moved to better Haldex systems and then to something else entirely.

Yup, somehow a tenacious drive system but a sensitive set-up. The Volvo shop guys test them by trying to get all 4 wheels spinning…one of the guys almost tossed his tuned and chipped S60R (sedan)sideways into a customers car. The “launch” was just incredible.FullSizeRender.jpg

Man those 95-99 Maximas were THE car when I was in HS. I couldn’t come close to affording one of those but I tried so hard to find one of the 89-94 SEs (4DSC!) but gave up as they were always just outside my range.

In the days when Foxbodies and early SN95s had 200-220 HP the Maximas were downright fast, especially with the 5MT.

I helped a friend swap a set of Maxima white face gauges into his Stanza come to think of it.

Don’t think I can make this happen this year, but next June could be in the cards.

After last years NMWs trip, some of us had been chatting about another event this year. But changing it up

Mine had 230,000 miles on it and rotted front fenders - it was my uncle's old car. I did put new fenders on it at one point - just a rattle can paint job, but for $250 it looked so much better. At about 250k the transmission started doing weird things. I'd come to a stop with it cold and the car would stall as if I stopped without pressing the clutch, but it was an automatic. If I restarted it and shifted to drive, it would immediately die. Do that a few times and it would eventually stay running and would be fine for the rest of the drive. It was definitely not worth putting money into.

It was very quick for a mid 90s sedan.

After college I had a 6th gen Maxima. I think 2006 maybe? Was a big car but had some pep with that 3.5L V6.

Guy I knew in my teens had an 81 or 82 Volvo sedan..with a Mustang 5 liter swap.

I remember the 4DSC. Guy in high school drove one of those (late 80s IIRC) and could mess with some of the gearheads in school with it.

My bet is the torque converter lockup switch. I had a couple of cars in that timeframe with the same issue.

Odo says 181kish. I stuck my head in to take a picture of the mileage but got distracted by the angle gauges.

It's only in the cards for me if I can convince my brother to go in halfsies with me, but even that depends entirely on the asking price haha

That would be a great project truck for a kid in high school at automotive trade school.
