fast enough now... but no sense in building on a dying platform at this point (for a new build ... not saying everyone should abandon current rigs)

Anyone that's been building PC's for the last 15+ years knows Intel has this tick-tock method of phasing out socket types.

Surprised they stuck with the same socket type for these last 3 generations really.

With that said, 'dying' is rather subjective as my 6700k lasted me more than 7 years running dual 1080 TI's; that system when I first built it was king for gaming. Only reason why I finally stepped up to 12th/13th gen two years ago was because I moved up to 2K gaming at that time.

The CPU I pulled (12400) is an absolute amazing value but was the bottleneck paired to my RTX 3080. The 13600K in it's stock form is a nice improvement in gaming especially in my CAD software that relies on single thread performance.

I'm thinking this 13th gen should give me a solid 4-5 years, maybe even more especially if I don't ever move up to 4K gaming; a 9 month old baby kind of takes up some time ya know?

But, the setup you described would be killer if I was upgrading from say, that 6700k build and never owned my 12th/13th gen setup.

I have been watching the post here and really enjoy reading them. Heck I don’t even have a Tacoma anymore.

Anyway, first time a picked up a stick welder in 20 years. Got a new job where I get to weld a little bit. I was excited to jump on the job and proud of how it turned out. Not perfect but still holding up, digging in rock a month later.

I dunno man ... I built my first one in 1996 and overclocked my first ones with the Athlons ( and the MPs; those 1700+ with DLT3C silicon were Blazing just over a gig!)

Maybe staying with 12400 would make sense unless the point of the build was to just go all out with current gen .... with as fast as things change, you cant stay current gen for more than about 8 montsh anyway so what the point in being reasonable. lol.

The need dictates the equipment; same as welding right? ;)

The 13600K is an improvement over the 12400; no real additional investment was made (was brand new, bartered some work for it for my neighbor).

But man, I'd place money that this currently 2 year old setup would last me much longer than your estimated 8 months :burp:

last more than 8 months as in be useful ... definitely. Im typing on a 8 year old HP Z620 with dual E5-2590 Xenon and 96 gig of ECC ram and a quadro K400 .... hell, it almost even play fortnite and runs Solidworks beautifully.

Still behind my Ryzen 7 rig ... and my dell precision I7 / RTXA3000

Sometimes the needs dictate the equipment ... and sometimes the equipment expands the possibilities. what if the need is ... the desire to build a top tier rig?

Like my Dynasty 700 ... never been above 400, but no one ever complained about having the extra HP if they ever want it.

Ok see, there's absolutely nothing wrong with top tier just because.

I've done that already over the last two decades.
