Over a year after bringing my 2017 Tacoma to the dealer to file a claim and it being denied, numerous phone calsl being told your VIN# is not included, a foral written complaint last April; I went to another dealer suggested by a friend. The second dealership sent me to their auto body partner who inspected it and Toyota agreed to fix the "effected areas" only. The auto body manager said the first thing they do on these paint issues is power wash it and more paint comes off. After 3 weeks I called the dealership to check to see when it would be done. They said we have good news for you. When they power washed it paint came off every panel of the truck so Toyota is going to paint the whole truck ($10k). I picked it up today and it looks like a brand new truck. Nice glossy finish rather than the chalky product that was originally on it. So be persistent, be patient and hope that the autobody shop preps with a power wash.

Wow! That’s awesome. Great to hear of your positive experience after getting the run around. Let’s hope all those affected by this defect finally get the same support and service moving forward.

    Any before and after photos?

Wow, I’m stoked for you. I just sold my 2015 because I was sick of seeing the paint flake off such a well taken care of and otherwise perfect truck.

They added another "0" to the paint code when they changed it from super white to Ice Cap and perhaps a formula change with it.

I just got off the phone with the number for Toyota that someone posted earlier in this thread. 1 800 331-4331. After taking my VIN and other information down, I was told that they are working on getting a company wide recall/fix done for affected cars that they have record of. No eta for when this will be, but I suggest that everyone who hasn't, give that number a call and get on the list so you will be notified if it ever happens.

I just called and opened a case for my 2014. The support representative opened a case for me, told me I can submit photos through the “Contact Us” form online and submit photos with my case number. Hopefully if enough 2nd Gen owners do the same, Toyota will expand the support program.

Did you get a confirmation email regarding your complaint? I never received one from Toyota after filing my complaint via phone.

They didn't give me a case number. I should probably check back with them and see. I also didn't get any confirmation email.

i just called in to add my vehicle to the growing list as well. They didn't mention anything about submitting photos but I'll attempt it using the method you described lol.

I asked, they said they don't have the capability to send emails regarding cases/complaints, so i took down the case number over the phone and will set it aside.

Guy basically said no recalls yet, but that could change, and to check back in 3-6 months with the vin/case number and see if there's any updates. Also was nice enough to let me know I have until February 27, 2026 to get my frame checked out lol

This is the reply I received after submitting photos. No surprises, but at least it’s on file for Toyota to reference if they start getting more 2nd gen complaints.

Thanks to everyone that is contributing to this thread. I just posted some pics of my fenders today here . Glad to find out this is actually a defect for this otherwise inexplicable damage. Big thank you to @AleHole to pointing me here. I'm the second owner but have the original dealership info and will be following up with them. Sounds like getting this resolved has been a bear for some people so I will be keeping you guys posted.

Is there a fix or way to mitigate the paint from failing. I’ve noticed my 2022 chips like crazy on the front end. Every Little Rock or debris causes a chip

I think the consensus is that the superwhite paint is not the greatest, regardless of whether or not it falls off the truck or stays stuck on. Tons of people have complained of rock chips exactly like you describe. As far as the peeling goes, I don’t think you can mitigate it as it appears to be a bonding issue on affected trucks. To mitigate rock chips you can try some form of clear film protection, but then you risk other issues with the paint if you ever need to take it off.

I did full front PPF and seems to help so far. The bigger impacted areas seem to be the rear doors at the windows.

I think I posted some photos of the paint flaking on the 2017 I drive for work a few months back in this thread when I took it to my local Toyota collision center for inspection, but over the last month the paint flaking has no spread to more panels. Originally was just on the front fenders and edges around the door windows, but after a recent heavy rainstorm with hail it's now spread to the edges of the hood, front edges of the rear bed panels, a small spot on the tailgate, and two areas on the main cab look like they will be also flaking soon. So basically almost every metal outside section of the truck is showing the issue now. The areas showing the worst wear are where wind hits from the front and top sides of panels where wind/rain hit. Going to reach out again to the collision center to see if they have gotten more info lately (they've processed more severe paint cases through Toyota Corporate previously they said).

Are any of you going to pay extra to have the whole truck painted instead of just doors and fenders?
