I was an automotive journalist for 17 years and the Jeep stuff was of signicantly poor quality — nearly as bad as Range Rover (Lucas, the Prince of darkness). That was under Chrysler’s reign. Better now? Dunno, but I would be suspect.

Not from Toyota unfortunately . Their cheapest 4wd truck is over 36k before TTL.

2018 Wrangler JLU....66K miles. Been fighting with them since May to approve paint repair on aluminum door panels that are showing corrosion paint bubbling. Both batteries died within first year. I replaced with Walmart batteries with 7 year warranty rather than OEM. Now I got to track down a very small oil leak coming off top of engine. Other than those it has been rock solid but I know there are a lot of people that have had issues.

My wife and I were going to buy a Grand Cherokee, but thankfully bought a 4Runner instead.

However, I am the original owner of a TJ, which is pretty basic... very few electronics. The one serious flaw is a redesigned OPDA that Chrysler put in to TJs for the last 2 or 3 production years (removed an oil channel to the upper bearing ). Fortunately, the aftermarket fixed it.

All these dealers are trying to get a piece of the pie before the pie burst or explodes in the next year.

Well, here’s the story that made me decide to wrap up my 40-year career as a copy editor and section designer. I led off my auto section one Saturday with a story I did about a local group who leased space in a downtown parking garage. brought in some mechanics and a few hungry lenders and started a seller’s auto market.

So, taking into consideration that my publication — a large metropolitan daily with a nearly half-million subscription base — was well-supported by auto dealer classified advertising, one can only imagine how that idea/story went over with the advertising department, and the story lasted ONE edition. I was called in to fall on my sword, which I refused to do considering it was a viable story of interest to our readers. I was told we could not run stories like that for the obvious reason, leading me to suggest I could be of more use elsewhere in the organization and two weeks later I moved on to another department. I missed the seemingly never-ending new test vehicles, but it became obvious to even a mental midget such as I that newspapering had become so biased that we no longer were selling even a modicum of truth.

That's what I ask about any fully loaded mass produced car (e.g., CX-5 w/leather, heated seats, premium sound, etc) compared to BMW X-5 that offers little more than just the BMW badge at double the cost.

Not to inflame the passions, but there is some rationale as to why the X5 is double the price of CX5: you will more likely to walk away from the totaled X5.

True, but in all honesty, how many people buy 'luxury' cars for the safety factor? I'd say a very small percentage.

The cx5 has a higher overall safety rating from NHSTA than the X5

    And generally comparable IIHS ratings
