Some people can just destroy a car interior in a short amount of time and I don't know how. Some cars are obviously cheaper inside, but for domestic truck I feel like it is just how they've been taken care of.

My parents traded their 2016 in after they put 206K miles on it, it felt brand new even with that many miles. They are such solid vehicles.

That may be true that both Trucks were designed in the USA, but you're forgetting something about the Toyota:
The T24A-TFS was reworked for this Tacoma to meet tougher criteria, but the T24 originated in a Lexus product that was engineered in Japan. I'd still trust the Toyota spec'd engineering and machining work of this truck over the GM.

This really was a terrible design, interesting how us 1st gen owners know to replace these LBJs as preventive maintenance so that our trucks don't barrel roll down the interstate lol.

I don’t hate turbos. I owned two vehicles with them. I don’t think they are a good fit for trucks as we’re learning there really isn’t much we’re gaining with these more complicated and more expensive engines.

If ford can make a range of turbo engines that do the job, im confident toyota can. Im betting they aren't playing the power game but have the engines detuned so they last. I bet you could get way more impressive power numbers with that power plant but decrease in reliability.

Well so far their Turbo truck engines are solid..at least the turbo...the bearings inside the motor...not so much...lol

They were, usually like using Toyota oem parts, but with those put the Sankei 555 on and have over 250K on them. Fricken impressive!

Low end torque and that is about it. Rather they stuck the 4.7 V8 in. Though Toyota can’t seem to get the same mpgs out of their V8s as the Americans, wonder if the overhead cams have anything to do with it? More parts moving, more friction, equals less efficiency?

All the midsize trucks are pretty similar now. It seems crazy to spend $5-10K more for one over the other just because of the badging. Save some money on the cheaper option and trade it in at 80 or 100K miles before things start breaking. I don’t think I would keep any of these new trucks for longer than that. Maybe the Frontier or Ridgeline.

I don’t even think we need that torque in the real world. It’s not like the truck can tow more with it. It’s just a number to use for marketing purposes.

V6 to turbo I4, is it really more expensive? Simpler block/head, two less of pistons, rods, valves, etc., add one turbo and intercooler (if equipped) and coolant/intake/exhaust routing. In the Toyota video with their chief engineer, he says the engine change is primarily for lower emissions, but I would not be at all surprised if it is the same or lower cost. I know they charge a princely sum for a new turbo, but that's what they can sell them for, not their cost. The similar hp but torque boost at lower rpm for the same or marginally better mpg, that's on the plus side. Durability we don't know yet. I am not against turbo in principle, but understand the caution.

True. Truck King said they power delivery didn’t feel all that different.

Dunno, mine feels like plenty, I am not terribly picky nor power hungry.

Yes a turbo engine is more expensive.

Equally equipped, the differences really aren’t $5-10k. They’re all pretty close in price. Trail boss collie to base tacoma OR, for instance, is a little under $3000 different but the OR offers a bit more in the feature list. I’d also generally bet that the suspension (with both the multi-link and the remote reservoir shocks) is better on the OR, but obviously that’s TBD with the 4g’s release.

Zr2 needs convenience package and tech package to match up closer to an OR premium, and those MSRPS are within about $2k also. Of course, you get a front locker in the zr2, but the number of people who would ever even use that are vanishingly small.

I think there are a lot of people willing to spend $2k for Toyota’s reputation.

That extra torque may get you to 60mph a 1/2 second faster or so. Not very useful or noticeable.

Where are you pulling that from?
The reason Truck King chose it to be their 2024 truck of the year was because of how much of an improvement it was over the 3rd gen.

Every single auto reviewer has focused heavily on how much better the power delivery was in this truck, which as terrible as it was in the 3rd gens I test drove, I believe them 100%.

Today I learned a 20% increase in peak torque AND shifting it to happen a whole 3,000 RPM sooner in the power band "isn't noticeable."

I'm not so sure you've driven a vehicle before

He mentioned it the mpg test, said it rode nice, interior fit better, power delivery was smooth and not all different from the 3rd Gen, sure more power down low, but got wheezy on top. Made the power feel equivalent to what it was replacing, didn’t go wild with it. So don’t think it is going to feel night and day difference. While it won their truck of the year, he didn’t seem all that impressed, especially with no massive gains in mpg, smaller gas tank, lower tow rating, plus big jump in price. Perhaps Toyota paid them for truck of year? Or nudged out the competition for the coil rear suspension and having more cab configurations?

I don’t find the power delivery in my 3rd Gen all that bad, actually feels quite punchy compared to my 1st Gen, most of my driving it shifts under 2000 rpm. Like the seating position too, not sure why people think they are sitting on the floor, feels upright enough to me, plus my legs are bent, while some say theirs are straight out. It fits me very well. Might hate the 4th Gen ergonomics, as I didn’t like the seating in my Trooper, felt like I was sitting on a stool.
