TPMS “stops” after 30 mins

Weird thing just started happening. Had to get 2 new tires. While at it I did a 4 tire rotation.

initially the TPMS seemed confused by this, but after a few reset button attempts, I get the TPMS to work, but it is short lived.

When I first start the truck, all 4 tires show “—-“ as to be expected. After driving for a few mins, all 4 tires register pressure.

About 30 mins later on freeway driving, I get my yellow TPMS light and all 4 tires to back to “—“. The pressure does not come back the rest of my commute (another 15-20min.)

I’m not sure how exactly the TPMS reports errors, but the fact that all 4 tires go to the “—-“ is weird.

this only started after the 2 new tires and the 4 tire rotation.

have driven a few hundred miles since rotation/new ties.

Did the tire shop damage the sensors ? Or replace them and didn’t reprogram them ?

I would suspect a problem. As far as I know they never stop reporting pressure. And they seem pretty real time. Just added some air last night and the readings updated also instantly.

Have you replaced them since 2016? I’m starting to wonder how much battery power is left on mine since 2017 also.

Damage….possible, but doubt it. And two tires weren’t touched…only rotated. The fact that all 4 drop offline is what is weird to me.

I have not. I too have wondered this, but all 4 go dead at the EXACT same time? FWIW, my wife’s Murano is a 2013 and still has original TPMS. Just this fall started getting indication of a possible dead battery.

So all this makes me wonder….if one of my 4 sensors goes bad, would it take all for offline and show “—-“ for all 4, or does it just show a single tire with “—-“???

All 4 going bad isn't the case. We know that if the system loses the location of one sensor there will be no pressures displayed at all. However, the truck will still know the 4 pressures and you can verify this by looking in techstream. My guess is one sensor is acting up somehow and that results in no tire pressures being shown on the display but that doesn't preclude the system from still knowing the pressures internally.

If you don't have a TPMS warning light the pressures are still known and within range.

At the “30” minute mark, I DO get the yellow TPMS warning light.

So, if I had a single sensor that was damaged, say it was intermittently working, is this how the system may act? Report all 4 pressures and then after a while the damaged one acts up and say looses signal. This would result in a yellow TPMS light and all pressures going “—-“.

I got the tire work from discount tire. I assume they would have the tool to read the system info. Maybe worth just going back and seeing what they can read?

Any tire shop will have a hand held trigger tool. They point it at the valve stem and it will display the sensor I.D., tire pressure, temperature and battery health.

This is exactly how mine started behaving when one of my sensors failed. As others have mentioned, I was able to verify via techstream that 3 sensors were still reporting and one had an error. Replaced that sensor and everything is back to working as expected.

The TPMS light is good information, I had missed that part. And yes, this is exactly how it will behave if one sensor is intermittently working or dying.

I see a few references to TechStream.

I’m new to the term. Looks like it’s a computer cable attachment? Via usb able to read cars computer a bit more in depth than a normal code reader?? Maybe I’ll invest in it.

Yes pretty much. Mine started after getting new tires so I suspect one may have been damaged. It was intermittent for about 6 months. I'd go to work and it was fine. Come home and I see no pressures. After 22 minutes the light flashes for a few minutes and goes solid. Next day it fine. Right when I thought there was a predictable pattern going on like hot and cold it would do something different. Sometimes like yours it would read then go out while driving. You'll go crazy watching your tire pressures. After about 6 months it all worked normally again for about 6 months. Now its dead. I get the light on right away. It's hard finding the bad sensor at first cause you have to check it while you have no pressure.

I'm due for new tires again so I'll replace all since they are original.

I've noticed for the past year or so that my TPMS won't show any readings if the outside temp is in the 50's or colder.
Once the Temp gets to 60 F or above and the sun is shining, it will show readings. None of my previous vehicles had TPMS so i don't really care about it, just something i noticed.

So I’m going to assume the spare doesn’t have a sensor? I’m asking in this thread because if we get a flat the system goes down until the damaged tire/wheel is repaired and back online?

There is another forum someplace on this page where folks have asked that. Seems like some are yes and maybe some are no? The consensus seems to be to crawl under your truck and look at the valve stem. If the valve stem looks just like your 4 tires (metal stem) then yes TPMS. If not the same and old school rubber….then no TPMS.

Just regurgitating what I’ve read. Maybe the various trim models differ???

Maybe it does, but do we really NEED tpms to drive? I mean, the truck still starts and moves in Forward and Reverse right? Lack of numbers on the dash doesn't render the vehicle inoperable does it?

TechStream is Toyota's App (that runs on Windows OS) that is used for for diagnostics and some systems settings
so yes more than most code readers, some of the higher end units can to all that TechStream can do plus other makes
