I left my shop around 6:15 this evening after the snow stopped, went to jump over McCarran and there were flares and a fire truck completely blocking it so I guess there must have been a pretty bad accident right at the bottom of the overpass by I80.
Bypassed by taking rock and then prater to Pyramid, but Pyramid was an absolute mess right at the bottom of the hill at the Queen/Farr light. At least a half dozen people scattered in vehicles that couldnt get going to make it up the hill. I pulled a 2wd F150 out of the way that was spun diagonal blocking the left lane an part of the middle/right lane. Hopefully people figured out their lives after that and cleared the road. lol

I left my house to run to the grocery store and it was fine -- aside from the accident I saw, but I figured that was just idiots. By the time I was headed back home it was just ice everywhere. Within a half hour the roads went from "just be careful" to "this is probably dangerous"

Just drove from family dinner in hidden valley home to midtown and watched a ranger spin on Mira loma, a small GM suv spin at Kietzke and plumb then try and drive over the median for instead of backing up which didn't work out for them. Then when our light turned green the wrangler next to me decided he wanted to use all the skinny pedal and they ended up drifting into our lane and nearly clipped the front of the car behind me.

It is going to be a busy night for first responders and tow trucks.

I slid halfway into an intersection earlier in 4wd just crawling along trying to stop for a red light. Roads were ice.

I'm slipping through, luckily nobody else was in front of me but I could see two cars in my rear view and all I was thinking was "look at what's happening to me, don't slide into the back of my truck" There was an F150 on my right just behind me and he saw me start to slide with the brakes on, and he moved over to the right. Good awareness bud! I was going less than 5mph moderating the brakes to stop at the light and it made no difference. Even when they locked up with the ABS I just kept sliding.

Also, if you're driving a white car in a snow storm, TURN YOUR FUCKING LIGHTS ON MORONS.

Today was a fun shift working valet. How those people made it over the pass today with summer tires in their nissan rogues I don't know. Then after my apartment alley was blocked for a bit since 15th street by virginia street and lawlor arena is steep. let them move 1 car since I didn't have straps with me at the moment and went down the same hill just fine. Over summer I didnt have recovery gear in the truck unless I was going off pavement. Winter now I need to just toss it in the bed since I leave the cover on.

    And
Thought rule of thumb was if you need your wipers, or the ground is not perfectly dry, lights on no matter what. Wouldn't be mad if they made that a law and a ticket-able offense

I am planning a trip to Great Basin NP and head to Oregon/Idaho.
Any tips on road travel? Not off road, thanks.

We might end up doing US 50 again and going north from Reno area. But, I was wondering what travel through Winnemucca would be like.

I appreciate your input. Its been a minute since I lived in NV.

If you like brown and flat, interspersed with hills in the distance, Winnemucca is your route! At least a lot of it is 80mph speed limit now so you can gtfo quicker.

    Thanks.
I plotted Ely to Eureka north to 80, Winnemucca, then north.
We love the colors of the desert.

I was in McDermitt as a kid bringing gift to the Rez. Saw scorpions and busted geodes. Preteen years. Have not been that far north, in Nevada, since.
Visited my uncle Ralph in Winnemucca late 80s.

McDermitt probably still looks exactly like it did in the late 80s. Drove through there in August on the way back from Boise

Anyone been up to Gerlach (or other northern NV areas) looking for geodes?

Have been looking up maps for good locations.

Never for geodes. Found lots of other cool stuff up that way, though.

395 is a nice scenic route. What time of year are you making the trip?

BTW if you don't already have them, Gem Trails of Nevada and Rockhounding Nevada are decent references. I would take the maps and directions in the latter with a grain of salt and do a lot of Google Earth scouting beforehand.
